Matt McMullen, LHP/1B, LaSalle Institute, NY (2015)
McMullen stands 6-foot-1, 220-pounds and built like a tank. On the mound he stays over the rubber well showing body control and balance. Drives off back leg towards home, good shoulder alignment towards target; arm action is long and back, shoulder tilt on release from a high-3/4 slot. Fastball sat 77-78 mph with down action and run arm side. Curveball shows signs of next level spin, late action, 12/6 shape at 67-70. He finishes strong over his front side using long extension. There is definitely more in the velocity tank than we saw. Offensively he has a very smooth swing generating a lot of power with his lower half but has a tendency to get long. At first he comes off the bag well, fields the ball out in front, stays low, clean exchanged, throws from a high-3/4 slot, infield arm strength at 74 mph. At the plate his setup is relaxed, slightly open and weight back. On the pitch he back loads, small leg lift for timing. He uses a long path, strong hands evidenced by his 85 mph exit velocity, uphill bat plane through the zone, high finish. He ran a 4.41 home to first, 4.50 pro agility time. This is a lefty to watch this spring.
