Updated 2016 PBR Draft 100

With the draft just two weeks away, a final update has been made to the PBR Draft 100. The top three spots remain intact in LHP Jason Groome (Barnegat HS, NJ), RHP Riley Pint (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, KS) and OF Mickey Moniak (La Costa Canyon HS, CA). Moving up to No. 4 is SS Delvin Perez (International Baseball Academy, PR), who has good actions and a strong arm on defense, giving him a good shot at sticking at shortstop.

Rounding out the top 10 are OF Blake Rutherford (Chaminade College Prep, CA), RHP Matt Manning (Sheldon HS, CA), RHP Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa HS, NY), 3B Josh Lowe (Pope HS, GA), LHP Braxton Garrett (Florence HS, AL) and RHP Forrest Whitley (Alamo Heights HS, TX).

Many familiar names remain in the top 50, with some changes in order, but several prospects have climbed draft boards with strong impressions this spring. SS Gavin Lux (Indian Trail HS, WI) added strength in the offseason and has stood out with his bat, pairing nicely with his ability on defense. An Arizona State recruit, he could find himself getting popped in the first round. OF Taylor Trammell (Mt. Paran Christian HS, GA) is a good athlete with the coveted combination of speed and power while RHP Jared Horn (Vintage HS, CA) saw his velocity tick up into the mid 90s. LHP Jeff Belge (Hanninger HS, NY) also made a big jump, landing at No. 33. After struggling last summer, the St. John’s recruit focused on getting in better shape and came out of the gates hot, sitting in the low 90s and mixing in a sharp, swing-and-miss breaking ball.

As one might expect, California leads the way with 13 prospects representing the state. Florida and Georgia each have nine, while Texas has eight. As we’ve known and discussed at length, there are a host of talented players in areas not known for being hotbeds. Kansas has four prospects in the top 100—three in the top 30—while Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin combined to have five, all in the top 50. Wisconsin’s representatives—Lux and C Ben Rortvedt (Verona HS, WI) landed back-to-back at Nos. 16 and 17 respectively.

It should be noted that RHP Tyler Baum (West Orange HS, FL) is still ranked, though he wrote a letter to Major League Baseball and is ineligible to be drafted. Signability is obviously a factor in the draft, but this list is meant to reflect a player’s talent. With Baum still considered one of the best prospects in the country, he remains even his name can’t be called in June.
