Vestal Vs. Union Endicott: Game Recap

Vestal 10 - Union Endicott 2

Finally a decent evening for some high school baseball last night as Vestal made the short trip to face Union Endicott in section 4 baseball. UE would send senior, RHP, Noah Burchill to the mound to square off with Mike Kosty, a 2016 graduate for Vestal.

Burchill started the game off hot striking out the first two batters, walking one, and getting a force out at second. UE's offense looked sharp early with a lead-off single from 2016, Jon Hoyt followed by a laser double from 2017, Mark Ryan. Hoyt would later score in the inning sac-fly giving UE the early 1-0 lead. Vestal however, would answer back with a run of their own putting together three straight singles, and a sac-fly making the score 1-1 through two innings of play.

In a game that saw several lead changes, Vestal would take the lead through four-innings 3-2 providing fans with a fun back-and-forth contest to watch. That would all change in the fifth-inning when Vestal pounded out seven hits, scoring seven runs making the score 10-2. Sean Lyons (1B), Matt Benko (1B), Mike Kosty (3B), Justin Perez (1B), Andrew O'Hara (1B), John Andrews (1B) and TJ Wegmann (1B) all provided the fire-power that sparked a crushing blow to the UE sideline.

For vestal Andrews, Wegmann, and Benko had multi-hit games while Kosty and Perez added two-RBI a piece respectfully. Vestal impressed me with their aggressive approach at the plate - especially in the fifth- inning when they knocked UE's starter (Burchill) out of the game and hard-throwing, 2015 Matt Bowman took the bump. The harder Bowman threw the baseball the better their at-bats looked.

For Union Endicott the bright spots came from sophomore Mark Ryan's hot bat going 2-4 with a quality approach at-the-plate, and senior Austin Malarkey who was 2-3 on the night. Tough-loss for UE but we saw some positives to take away - things that can be learned - from the loss.
