Best of the Rest 2014 Prospects from the Pre-Season Underclass



Earlier, we highlighted the Top Prospects from the Class of 2014 at the Preseason Underclass II in Cincinnati, Ohio. Below, we recap the best of the rest from the event. In the coming day, we will review the Classes of 2015 and 2016.

Austin Skeese, RHP/IF, Licking Valley HS

6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect. Showed good defensive actions with his hands. Reached a top velocity of 71 mph on his throws. At the plate, he starts from a wide, open stance. Needs to work on consistently squaring up the front side. Uses a short stride. Currently a slappy, line drive type hitter. On the mound, he uses moderate arm speed through upper 3/4 slot. Has high backside arm extension. Showed some sink action on fastball, ranging 77-78 mph. Has some feel for off-speed pitches. Breaking ball has some downward spin at 67-68 mph while split changeup has downward movement (72-74 mph).

Ben Murphy, RHP/3B, Wooster HS

6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. In the field, he shows long arm action with some wrap to it. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph on his throws. Needs to continue improving footwork and quickness of exchange. At the plate, he displays rotational mechanics. Tends to collapse his lower half. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Squares the ball up for solid, line drive production. On the mound, he shows average arm speed and his delivery requires some effort. His fastball sits 79-82 mph with slight run. His curveball is 68-69 mph but doesn’t show much break while his changeup sits at 75-76 mph.

Clay Ebbrecht, RHP, Pickerington North HS

6-foot-4, 225-pound big bodied pitcher with high front side knee kick. Also has some funk with arm action. Shows little movement on fastball (73-77 mph). Shows some feel for cutter (74-77 mph). Slows arm speed down on changeup (60-62 mph).

Craig Koogler, OF/RHP, Fairmont HS

5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect. From the outfield, he showed short arm action through a high ¾ slot to reach a top velocity of 73 mph. Needs to continue improving footwork and quickness of his exchange. At the plate, he starts from a slight crouch and uses a short stride. Takes uphill path to the ball. Needs to improve overall balance as he has a tendency to dive. On the mound, the right-hander shows some effort to his delivery. He shows slight run on his 78-82 mph fastball. His curveball showed 11/5 break at 70-71 mph and his slider stayed on one plan at 73-74 mph. He needs to continue to develop a feel for his 69-71 mph changeup.

Isaiah Haley, C, Cincinnati Christian HS

6-foot, 180-pound catching prospect. Shows a quick transfer and good footwork behind the plate. Receives well. Reached a top pop time of 2.12 and a top velocity of 75 mph on his throws from the crouch. At the plate, he starts with a wide base. Tends to bar his arm in his load, which causes some issues with his swing path. Shows some strength in his hands (85 mph exit velocity off the tee). Uses uphill path to the ball. Strong prospect with some potential if he can improve his load.

Jack Goodwin, 3B/OF, Rock Hill HS

5-foot-11, 195-pound prospect with solid, muscular build. Registered a 4.31 home to first time from the right side. Aggressive hitter at the plate. Takes his hacks (88 mph exit velocity) and displays a strong lower half. Tends to bar his arm in his load, which creates some issues with his swing path. In the field, he reached a top velocity of 78 mph with max effort throws. Needs to continue improve his footwork and quickness of his exchange.

Jeff Pearce, LHP, Fairfield HS

5-foot-10, 160-pound medium size hurler. Shows balanced delivery . Moderate upper 3/4 arm speed. Fastball is fairly straight. Velocity ranged 74-76 mph. Shows little feel on curve (59-61 mph) but has some downward sink action with changeup (66-67 mph).

John Phillips, RHP, Miami Trace HS

6-foot-4, 260-pound right-handed pitcher with big, soft frame. Uses ¾ arm action with below average arm speed. Shows some rhythm to his delivery. Fastball is straight at 74-76 mph. Curveball sits at 67-68 mph and slider shows better movement at 73-74 mph. Changeup is his best off-speed pitch at 70-71 mph.

Jonathan Joseph, LHP, Rock Hill HS

6-foot-4, 240-pound southpaw with thick, solid build. Uses short arm action through over the top arm slot. Tends to land open, which takes away from the torque in his delivery. Fastball shows some sink at 76-78 mph. Breaking ball sits at 67-69 mph with some side-spin. His changeup shows occasional sink at 66-69 mph.

Kyle Lepper, OF, Lakota East HS

5-foot-9, 180-pound outfield prospect. Uses quick arm action through high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 83 mph on his throws. Footwork shows some fluidity and has some quickness to his transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter uses a short stride. Tends to land closed, which stops his hips from rotating through. Uses a short path to the ball with line drive type production.

Muhammad Groomes, OF/LHP, Withrow HS

5-foot-10, 150-pound skinny, athletic prospect. Shows some athleticism in actions. Has good body balance and accepts ball well with arm strength (80 mph). Right handed hitter that uses an open stance with flat plane bat path (75 mph exit velo). Needs to enhance top hand with swing and better hand finish to increase power. On the mound, the lefty throws form an over the top arm slot with above average arm speed. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits at 76-78 mph with some run. Curveball sits at 63-65 mph and changeup has some sink at 67-70 mph.

Sean Clayton, 1B, Sycamore HS

5-foot-11, 220-pound first baseman with big, solid build. In the field, he shows short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 66 mph on his throws. At the plate, he starts from a wide stance. Uses a short stride with a simple load. Shows some quickness in his hands (83 mph exit velocity). His bat is his best tool. The ball jumps off his bat with pull power potential.

Tanner Nethers, OF/RHP, Licking Valley HS

5-foot-9, 140-pound prospect with smallish build. Showed good foot speed with a 4.25 second time to first base. Showed 75 mph arm strength. Will improve with improved balance and consistent arm slot release. Right handed hitter that starts from a squared hitting stance. Triggers hands from chest level causing flat path bat plane. Upper body type hitter at this point. On the mound, the right-hander throws from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with below average arm speed. His fastball sits 72-73 mph while his curveball sits 61-65 mph and his changeup is at 66-69 mph.

Thaddeus Ferguson, IF, Mars Hill HS

5-foot-9, 165-pound infielder with small, athletic frame. Projects as a second base type. His hands work very well. Has good actions defensively with glove work and range. Has 74 mph arm strength from all angles. Ran 4.53 second time to first base. Hits from open stance. Has chest level hand trigger and some upper cut bat path (78 mph exit velocity). Needs to improve use of his lower half.

Tim Shimrock, IF, Moeller HS

5-foot-10, 145-pound prospect that projects best as a second baseman. Accepts ball well with 68 mph arm strength. Needs to improve more consistent lower half. Registered a 4.35 time to first base from the right side. Hits from an open stance. Upper body type hitter. Triggers hands from shoulder. Has long bat path into zone.

Tommy Parsons, RHP, New Albany HS

6-foot-3, 165-pound pitching prospect. Uses average arm speed with long arm action through ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 78-80 mph with occasional run. Shows good command ability to locate it. Curveball is thrown for strikes with 10/4 break at 64-66 mph. Tends to slow down his arm action on a 68-69 mph changeup.

Tyler Jester, OF, Dublin Coffman HS

5-foot-7, 160-pound outfield prospect with small, strong frame. Ran solid 4.25 home to first time from the right side. Shows good outfield skills with solid over the top throws at 75 mph. Offensively, he hits from open stance. Upper body type with flat path bat plane (78 mph exit velocity). Produces consistent line drives with overall excellent balance to his swing.

Tyler McDaniel, LHP/OF, Edgewood HS

5-foot-8, 160-pound smallish type player. Registered a 4.61 time to first base from the left side. Hits from closed stance. Uses shoulder level hand trigger. Takes level path to the ball. Needs to square front side consistently. Defensively accepts ball well with 76 mph arm strength. On the mound, he throws with short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits 72-73 mph while his curve stays at 63-64 mph and his split-finger fastball sits at 66-67 mph.
