Flashback - History of Team Ohio and the PBR Future Games

15PHTPG

On July 30th through August 1st, PBR Ohio will take a select team of players in the Classes of 2017 and 2018 to represent Ohio at the PBR Future Games in Indianapolis at Grand Park.

Players receive exposure unlike any other event for underclassmen. Last year, 100 colleges from all over the country were in attendance, including coaches from every DI power conference in the country. Only players who have a legitimate shot at being a Division I recruit and who have an interest in the possibility of making a verbal commitment during their sophomore or junior seasons will be considered.

Every player in the PBR Future Games is outfitted in Under Armour gear, including a uniform, shoes, and a hat.

Players are selected throughout the year as we cover not only PBR events but the high school season and summer circuit as well. Over the winter, a handful of players will receive invitations, but the summer will help shape the roster as we embark on "The Journey to the Future Games" with Underclass Games being held on four dates across Ohio:

+ June 2nd - The Southern Ohio Underclass Games at the University of Cincinnati
+ June 29th - The Central Ohio Underclass Games at The Ohio State University
+ July 15th - The Northern Ohio Underclass Games at Kent State University
+ July 28th - The Miami Valley Underclass Games at Wright State University

THE HISTORY

In 2014, Team Ohio impressed as they cruised to a 3-0 record against Team Indiana, Team Illinois, and Team Kentucky. To see all the articles from the event, including complete statistics and scouting notes, please click here.

Highlights from the first game against Team Indiana include:

+ 2016 LHP Jackson Tedder (Beavercreek HS), who later committed to Virginia, pitched two solid innings striking out four sitting 84-87 with a 68-70 curveball and 74 change.

+ 2016 IF Sam LaFontaine from Western Reserve Academy led the offensive attack going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

+ One big surprise was 2017 RHP Tyler Brown (Olentangy Orange) who's fastball was up to 91. Brown is currently talking with a number of SEC programs, including LSU and Vanderbilt.

Highlights from the second game against Team Illinois include:

2016 Cameron Junker (Moeller High School), started the game off going two innings sitting 86-89 on the fastball with a 75-76 slider and a 76 change. In the fall, Junker later committed to Notre Dame over a host of Big 10 and ACC offers.

2016 RHP Tyler Drabick (North Canton Hoover) came in to pitch the fifth inning sitting 84-88 with his fastball along with a sharp 76-78 slider that had good late break to it.

The offense was led by Colt Caughenbaugh (2016, OF/1B, Licking Valley) with two hits in the game. Other offensive standouts were Jake Ruby (2017, OF, Bishop Hartley) with a double while Nate Monastra (2016, Catcher, Olentangy), Kaleb Lepper (2016, OF, Lakota East), Dominic Canzone (2016, OF/1B, Walsh Jesuit) and Hunter Sexton all contributed with hits.

Highlights from the third game against Team Kentucky include:

2016 RHP Gavin Lyon, who later committed to Ohio State set the tone, sitting 87-90 on the fastball with a 12/6 curveball at 69-72. Gavin was really able to pound the zone with his fastball.

2016 Michael McDonough, who committed to Ohio State just days before the event, closed the door pitching a pretty clean sixth and seventh inning. The Ohio State commits fastball sat 85-87 with good life while also showcasing a 68-70 curveball with good depth, and a 74 mph change.

The offensive attack was led by Bryant Shellenbarger (2016, 6-2,190 pound OF, Mt. Vernon) with a double, triple and two RBIs. Cody Gabriel (2016, 6-3, 235 pound, 1B/LHP Upper Sandusky) added a hit with two RBIs while Jake Ruby had a stolen base and run scored. Kaleb Lepper had an infield hit and Colt Caughenbaugh stayed hot with a double and an RBI.

Quotes from Previous Participants

"I think the Future Games was a great experience I'll never forget. It helped me gain tons of exposure from all the top colleges and definitely helped me find my way to Louisville." - Nick Bennett, LHP, Moeller HS/Louisville recruit, 2016

"The experience was amazing. Team Ohio was filled with a bunch of great kids who had a great time together. From a scouting standpoint, it was like no other event. There were eyes on you at all time and it was up to you to perform." - Tyler Drabick, RHP/IF, North Canton Hoover HS/Kent State recruit, 2016

"Without the experience at the Future Games, I wouldn't be where I am now. It gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to perform in front of a lot of coaches, and I just did my best to take full advantage of it. Life changing experience." - TJ Lake, OF/IF, Toledo St. Johns HS/West Virginia recruit, 2015

"The futures games was a great experience because you go to play games as well as do a scout day/workout before it all started. It was great to meet a bunch of the top recruits around the Midwest." - Evan White, 1B, Gahanna Lincoln HS/Kentucky recruit, 2014

"It was a really fun way to get exposure from college coaches and see what the competition will be like in college. I also ended up playing with my future teammate Evan White and against Brad Schaenzer who is also here at Kentucky." - Zach Logue, LHP, Moeller HS/Kentucky recruit, 2014
