Ohio Spotlight Game: #34 Strongsville vs Brunswick

STRONGSVILLE - Ohio University commit Matt Brosky (Ohio University commit, #35 ranked in 2018 class) shows off why he’s one of the top ranked pitchers in the state, going the distance, and getting the complete game victory over Brunswick, 9-2.

Brosky started off the game striking out the first two batters that came to the plate. Jake Williams (Tiffin University commit) then scorched a ball up the middle into center field for hit. Brosky then got Jake's younger brother Mike Williams to ground into a fielder’s choice.

Brunswick’s defense prevailed in the first with two diving catches, one by centerfielder Cameron Sasala and the other by right fielder Jared Vance.

Strongsville kept swinging the bat well into the second inning where four straight hits, three of them being infield singles, which started a five run inning.

Giovanni Lombardo started the inning with an infield single that trickled between the first and second baseman. Trevor Denning (#192 ranked in 2018 class) then hit a ball hard back up the middle that deflected off of the pitcher’s glove towards third base. J.D. Duplain (#29 ranked in 2019 class) rolled over on a ball that again went between the first and second baseman giving Strongsville their third straight infield hit and loading the bases with nobody out. Jack Frank (Michigan State commit, #1 ranked in 2019 class) shot a double down the left field line scoring two runs.

With runners at second and third, Brunswick brought their infield in.

Karthan got a ground ball right at the shortstop, and with Duplain running on contact, he was thrown at at the plate for the first out. Karthan then looked to get out of the inning when he got Mitch Midea to hit a ground ball back to the mound, which he turned and fired towards second. The ball was under-thrown and was not able to be handled to turn a double play or get an out.

Leadoff hitter Alex Gray (Uncommitted senior, #193 ranked in 2017 class) drew a walk and Parker Shannon (Mercyhurst commit, #145 ranked in 2017 class) hit Strongsville’s fourth infield single of the inning to score another run, making the score 4-0. Another double play ball was hit that looked like it could potentially end the inning, but Brunswick was unable to turn two and Strongsville got their fifth run of the inning on the fielder’s choice.

Brunswick came back firing in the top of the third with two singles to start the inning, but Brosky was able to get a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout to end the inning without surrendering a run.

In the fourth, Brunswick strung together three straight hits this time to score two runs ad cut the deficit to three runs.

To leadoff the inning, Mike Williams hit a single to left field. Brandon Kenik hit a double over the left fielder’s head, allowing Williams to score from first, and Kenik with heads up baserunning, advanced to third on the throw home. Derek Kutrubs collected the third straight hit of the inning scoring Kenik with a single to centerfield. Brosky then once again settled down retiring the next three batters in order via lineout, strikeout, and flyout.

Strongsville scored once in the fourth and fifth inning, and scoring two more runs in the sixth to win 9-2.

Trevor Denning hit a two-out, RBI double in the fourth inning to score Shannon after he singled to left field with one out.

In the fifth, Jack Frank led off the inning with his second double of the day, this time splitting the gap in right center field. Mitch Midea scored Frank on a single to right field after the right fielder saw the ball go through his legs, Midea advanced to second and Frank scored easily.

Giovanni Lombardo hit a double to right center field in the sixth inning, followed by a single to center by Trevor Denning, and an RBI single to left field by J.D. Duplain. Denning moved up to second on the single by Duplain, and was able to score without the benefit of a hit, advancing and scoring on two wild pitches.
