Ohio Spotlight Game: #43 Walsh Jesuit vs Padua Franciscan

CUYAHOGA FALLS - It was a back and forth battle between conference rivals, but some late inning heroics led Padua over Walsh Jesuit by the final score of 8-5.

Jace Burke (Evansville commit, #75 ranked in 2017 class) started on the mound for the Walsh Jesuit Warriors went 5 strong innings with 6 strikeouts to get the no decision. Padua starter Tommy Whitely (Uncommitted senior) matched Burke’s effort going 4 strong innings also getting a no decision in what was a battle until the very last out.

Matthew Kazimour doubled down the left field line in the first inning and eventually scored on a two-out infield single by Collin Pavlus. Walsh Jesuit answered back in the bottom half of the first with Brendan Regan (Michigan State commit, #22 ranked in 2017 class) using his speed to beat out an infield single and was followed by a perfectly laid down bunt by Drew Wilkinson (Uncommitted, #169 ranked in 2018 class). Regan once again showed off his speed advancing to third on a flyout to center field and coming in to tie the game up at 1 on a single to left off the bat of cleanup hitter Nathan Stahl (Uncommitted class of 2019).

Padua answered back in the second with a leadoff single from Zack Barther, a sacrifice bunt, and a walk to Michael Progar. Barther came in to score on a wild pitch, giving Padua the 2-1 advantage in the early innings. Jace Burke struck on the final batter to strand a runner at third.

Walsh once again answered back.

Thayne Ocel leading off the inning with a walk followed up by a single by Easton Kindall to left center field. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Still with no outs, Ocel tried to score on a wild pitch that took a Padua bounce off the backstop, and was tagged out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Whitely got the hitter to foul out to the first baseman and suddenly there were two outs on two pitchers. Walsh turned it over to the top of the lineup where Brendan Regan recorded his second hit in as many innings, shooting an RBI single to right field.

The Warriors added another run in the fourth inning. Whitely got the first two batters to flyout then walked the #9 hitter Matt Lobeck. Regan once again came through, this time with a two-out RBI double to left center that rolled to the fence, allowing Lobeck to score all the way from first.

With a slim 3-2 lead in the top half of the sixth, Walsh Jesuit ran into some trouble. Jace Burke came out of the game due to pitch count, and was relieved by Yassir Kahook.

Kahook’s first pitch ran too far inside, hitting Padua’s Justin Beckwith. Zack Barther followed up on the next pitch with a bunt single. Two straight walks gave Padua a run to tie the game at three with nobody out and the bases loaded. Kahook got himself out of trouble inducing a strikeout and an infield fly to the first baseman. Now two outs and the bases loaded, cleanup hitter Alex Ludwick (Baldwin Wallace commit) came to the plate hoping to give his team the lead. On a full count pitch, Ludwick drove a fly ball high and deep to right center that cleared the fence for a grand slam. Padua’s lead was suddenly four.

Walsh Jesuit showed fight scoring a run in each of the last two innings but coming up short.

Matt Lobeck drove in both runs with a solo homerun to leadoff the bottom of the sixth, and an RBI double to left center in the seventh. The Warriors had runners on second and third with two outs after Lobeck’s double, and the Padua Bruin’s decided to intentionally walk Brendan Regan, who was 4-4 coming into the seventh. Alex Ludwick came into pitch the final out of the game, and on the first pitch, was able to get Wilkinson to fly out to center.
