PBR Spotlight Game: #6 Waynesville vs #18 Versailles

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Mason Callahan goes the distance to secure a 1-0 win in the Division III District Championship for the No.6 ranked Waynesville Spartans over the No. 18 ranked Versailles Tigers.

The District Final flew by in an hour and thirty-four minutes, much ado to the pitcher’s duel between the aforementioned Callahan and Versailles' 2016 RHP Brett Mcledowney.

In the first inning, the two pitchers would sit the top of the opposing lineup down in order starting a pattern that became quite common.

Versailles started to threaten in the second inning after Derek Bornhorst sent a Callahan fastball back up the middle to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved Bornhorst over, Callahan induced a ground out and a strikeout to take the game into the third inning scoreless.

After an uneventful third and fourth inning for both teams, the fifth inning welcomed the only run of the day. Lead-off walks will drive a pitching coach wild and the Waynesville fifth inning is evidence of why.

Waynesville’s third basemen Andrew Magato lead off taking four straight pitches for a free pass, only to be pushed over by second basemen Bryce Linkous’s sacrifice bunt. After a Troy Black fly out, the Spartans’ senior catcher Jeremiah Stilwell would muscle a ball into right field to score Magato and allow the Spartans to claim a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth.

Versailes only additional offensive threat would come in sixth inning when back-to-back singles by Borchers and Nick Moorman put runners on first and second with one out. Callahan swiftly stymied the offensive rally with a strikeout and a fly out to centerfield to take a 1-0 lead into the final inning.

After a 1-2-3 Waynesville top half, Callahan would be sent out to finish what he started in the bottom of the seventh inning.

A one-out Versailles single would be all the Tigers could produce in the seventh, as Callahan would strikeout the final batter of the game and advance Waynesville to the Regional Semifinals.
