Below, PBR Ohio recaps the prospects from the August 8th Toledo Open ID at Toledo Central Catholic's Mercy Field. To view the complete statistical results, please click here.


TOP CLASS OF 2013 PROSPECTS

1. Ryan Vargo, RHP, Clearview HS, Class of 2013 

6-foot-3, 173-pound right-handed pitching prospect with big, athletic frame. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot with quick arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sat 84-87 mph with some run to it (Showed 86-89 mph a couple weekends later at unaffiliated event). Curveball sat at 66-67 mph with late 11/5 break. Needs to continue working on consistency of command. Also displayed a 74 mph cutter with some slight bite to it. Changeup sits at 80 mph with straight action. With continued development of his off-speed pitches, Vargo could see his stock continuing to shoot up at this stage of the recruiting process.

2. Chris Tomshack, RHP/OF, Elyria Catholic HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect. Projects best as a pitcher. Shows quick, short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball is heavy at 83-85 mph. Uses an 81-83 mph cutter with good action. Changeup sits 74-76 mph with good arm side fade. Also shows a 75 mph knuckle ball with some tumble to it. Secondary pitches are good, but still needs effective breaking ball as an out pitch. In the outfield, he shows some athleticism. Registered a 7.25 60-yard dash. Uses quick arm action. Reached a top velocity of 84 mph. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance with a short stride. Tends to bar his arm in his load. Swing gets long. Shows the occasional pop in his swing with more to come as he makes some small adjustments.

3. Dylan Henricks, SS/3B, Evergreen HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. Registered a 7.49 60-yard dash. Likely a third baseman or offensive second baseman at the next level. Shows good hands and footwork, but range likely doesn’t translate to short stop at the next level. Aggressive to the baseball. Uses quick arm action and a quick transfer. Top velocity of 82 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and a short stride. Shows quick hands into the zone. Uses the whole field with line drive production. Overall, solid prospect.

4. Brandon Schreiber, C, Wapakoneta HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 170-pound catcher with solid, athletic frame. Registered a 7.29 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he uses short, stiff arm action. Quick and compact. Pop times sat between 2.06-2.13 with a top velocity of 80 mph. This should continue to improve as exchange and transfer are improved.  At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a high hand trigger and slightly open stance. Tends to bar his arm in his load, which creates some length. Will help consistency of swing and overall power by shortening. Shows some pull power. Solid prospect that hasn’t reached potential.

TOP CLASS OF 2014 AND 2015 PROSPECTS

1. Adam Wolf, LHP, Edison HS, Class of 2015

6-foot-4, 165-pound southpaw with thin, lanky frame. Definite follow in the Class of 2015. Still learning how to use lower half. Throws from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 78-82 mph with good run to it. When he quickens the pace of his delivery and incorporates the lower half, his fastball sat at 81-82 mph. Shows a plus breaking ball with 2/8 break. Throws it near fastball arm speed at 65-67 mph. Also showed a potential third pitch with a 69 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. The pitch was straight but showed some fade to it. Still learning how to use his body, but shows sign of great potential for the future.

2. Axel Bueter, OF/LHP, Wauseon HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 150-pound potential two-way prospect. Athletic, solid build. Registered a 7.00 60-yard dash. From the outfield, shows quick arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 85 mph. At the plate, he hits from the right side. Starts with wide base with a short stride. Good bat speed with some strength in his hands. Short, level path to the ball. On the mound, the southpaw shows quick arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 80-83 mph with some cut. Curveball shows late, 2/8 break at 67-69 mph while changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 69-71 mph.

3. Reid Renollet, LHP/OF, Defiance Tinora HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 175-pound two-way prospect. Continues to be an interesting follow. Right now, future is likely brightest on the mound. Doesn’t overwhelm you with you velocity, but shows good pitchability. Fastball sits at 76-79 mph with good natural cutting action. Curveball sits at 64-66 mph with late 1/7 break. Changeup is his best off speed pitch. Thrown near fastball arm action with good fade at 68 mph. Registered a 7.63 60-yard dash. Likely corner outfield type. Reached a top velocity of 82 mph with good actions in the field. Needs to continue to quicken transfer and exchange. At the plate, he shows good balance to his swing. Does a good job of using the whole field. Simple load with short stride. Keeps hands inside the baseball. Line drive type production.

4. Anthony Stockwell, LHP/OF, Perrysburg HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-1, 165-pound prospect with lanky frame. Projects best as a pitcher at the next level. Shows above average arm action through a ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 80-82 mph with some natural cut to it. Curveball sits 66-67 mph. Shows late, 1/7 break. Needs to work on overall command of the pitch. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 70-73 mph. In the field, he shows good hands and footwork around the bag with a quick transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a closed stance. Shows good use of his lower half and quick hands into the zone. Uses the whole field well with some pull power.

BEST OF THE REST

Alec Adams, OF/LHP, Vermillion HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 165-pound prospect. Registered a 7.59 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he throws through a high ¾ arm slot. Reaches a top velocity of 77 mph. Needs to consistently play through the baseball. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a long stride. Shows good use of his lower half with above average bat speed. On the mound, the southpaw shows average arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Overall choppy rhythm. Fastball sits 71-75 mph with some cut. Curveball shows some spin at 64-67 mph and changeup is erratic at 67 mph.

Austin Yant, RHP/1B, Defiance HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 205-pound prospect. Registered a 8.36 60-yard dash. Moves well around the bag at first, but needs to continue improving footwork. Best tool is his bat. Uses slightly open stance with big load. Tends to wrap his bat during his load. Uses a big stride. Shows quick hands into the zone (despite wrapping) and a slightly uphill path to the ball. Creates some pull power in his swing. On the mound, the righty throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits at 77-79 mph with straight action. Curveball stays at 70-72 mph with late 11/5 break. Changeup shows some arm side run at 69-71 mph.

Bennett Kinzel, OF/1B, St. Igantius HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect. Registered a 7.31 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he shows short, stiff arm action through a high ¾ to over the top slot. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph. Needs to continue improving footwork. At first base, he shows good actions around the bag. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a high-hand trigger. Uses a wide stance with balance setup. Shows a short stride. Disdplays above average bat speed. Fluid rhythm to his swing with line drive production.

Brandon Peglow, RHP, Ayersville HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed pitching prospect. Uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits at 75-78 mph with straight action. Curveball sits at 62-65 mph with gradual 11/5 break to it. Shows some depth. Changeup sits at 67-70 mph. It is thrown near fastball arm action with similar movement to his fastball.

Cody Lewis, OF, St. Francis DeSales HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 170-pound prospect with short, solid build. Registered a 7.53 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 72 mph. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Needs to improve speed of transfer and exchange. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a long stride, which causes timing issues. Starts with high hand trigger. Has a tendency to get long in his swing. Displays line drive, opposite field production.

Jake Porter, OF, Elida HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 135-pound outfielder. Registered a 7.85 60-yard dash. Uses short stride with high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 76 mph. Shows some life to his throws. Fluid footwork, but needs to shorten exchange and transfer. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a high hand trigger. Starts heavy on the backside. Tends to bar his arm during his load, which creates opposite field tendencies in his swing.

Jevin Williams, IF/RHP, Canal Winchester HS, Class of 2015

5-foot-6, 125-pound prospect. Short, thin frame. Registered a 8.6 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Shows average hands. Needs to improve footwork. Reached top velocity of 65 mph across the infield. At the plate, he uses a short stride with average bat speed. Takes short, level path to the ball. Needs to continue becoming physically stronger. On the mound, he uses a slow rhythm with a big inward leg kick. Fastball sits 74-77 mph with some run. Curveball shows some spin at 63-64 mph. Tends to cuff it. Changeup sits at 73-74 mph.

Joe Khoury, 3B/1B, St. Igantius HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-11, 215-pound corner infield prospect with solid build. Uses long arm action through low ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 76 mph, but needs to improve overall accuracy. Shows good athleticism for his size and above average hands. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride and strong lower half to generate good torque in his swing. Takes short, level path to the ball. Shows pull tendencies in his swing. Needs to work on consistency of getting extension. More power left in him.

Joshua Murphy, LHP, Toledo Waite HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 225-pound left-handed pitching prospect. Shows average arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort to it. Fastball sits 78-81 mph with some natural cut. Curveball shows 1/7 break at 61-63 mph. Also uses a 73-76 mph changeup that is thrown near fastball arm speed with occasional fade to it.

Kenzie Mayo, LHP, Toledo St. Francis DeSales HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 155-pound southpaw. Throws from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with long, loose arm action. Delivery doesn’t require much effort. Fastball sits 71-73 mph with a little natural cut to it. Curveball sits at 60-62 mph with gradual 2/8 break. Shows some good depth to it. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 67-68 mph with some fade.

Kyle Willis, 3B/1B, Teays Valley HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 210-pound infield prospect with thick, solid build. Projects as a third baseman or first baseman at the next level. Reached top velocity of 72 mph across the infield. Uses low ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Needs to improve fluidity of footwork and exchange. At the plate, he starts a high hand trigger and a short stride. Shows good, raw potential at the plate with pull power. His bat is his best tool at this stage.

Matthew Lyons, RHP, Crestwood HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-1, 210-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound, he uses long arm action through a low ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits at 67-69 mph and shows some natural run due to arm slot. Curveball stays on one plane at 60-62 mph with some spin to it. Changeup sits at 60-61 mph. However, he tends to slow down his arm action with the pitch.

Matt Smith, OF, Olentangy Orange HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-9, 163-pound prospect with solid frame. Registered a 7.89 60-yard dash. Corner outfield type. Reached top velocity of 78 mph. Uses quick arm action through over the top slot. Not exceptionally fast, but little wasted movement in his actions. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a tall, narrow stance and low-hand trigger. Relies on a long stride. Overall, simple load. Squares the ball up well with some pull power. Line drive type hitter with some pull tendencies to his swing.

Michael Roder, LHP, Padua Franciscan HS, Class of 2013

Left-handed pitcher that comes from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Shows average arm speed with short arm action. Delivery doesn’t require much effort. Fastball sits 62-66 mph with some cut. Curveball sits at 58-60 mph. Stays on one plane with some spin. Changeup stays at 59-61 mph.

Nate Rau, SS/RHP, Bryan HS, Class of 2016

5-foot-9, 140-pound prospect with thin build. Registered 7.38 60-yard dash. In the infield, shows good potential for his age. Plays well across the middle. Footwork can be flat at times. Needs to continue improve actions to his backside. Uses short arm action with low ¾ slot. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a long stride, which causes some timing issues. Bars his front arm in load, which creates opposite field tendencies in his swing. On the mound, he throws from a low ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort as the front side comes open early. Shows long arm action. Fastball sits 72-76 mph. Curveball is flat at 66-67 mph and changeup sits at 70 mph with some run to it.

River Wicker, RHP, Edon HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed pitcher. Small, athletic build. Shows some surprising velocity for his size. Delivery requires some effort. Shows quick arm action through high ¾ to over the top slot. Fastball sits 79-81 mph with some run to it. Curveball sits 63-65 with 12/6 action. Changeup shows similar run to his fastball at 71 mph.

Rob Tyrell, C/OF, Bowling Green HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 165-pound prospect with thin build. Registered a 7.34 60-yard dash. From the outfield, shows long, stiff arm action while reaching a top velocity of 70 mph. Needs to improve exchange and transfer. Behind the plate, he uses a low ¾ arm slot with his throws. Reached a top velocity of 66 mph. Pop times sat between 2.55-2.61. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a toe tap trigger for his load. Tends to bar his arm in his load, which creates some length to his swing. Takes a flat, level path to the ball.

Ryan Myers, RHP, St. Mary Central Catholic HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed pitching prospect with thin, lanky frame. Uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 76-78 mph with some run to it. Curveball sits at 63-67 mph with 11/5 spin. Also shows a 61-62 mph knuckleball with some tumble.

Spencer Saltis, SS, Amherst HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-10, 140-pound prospect with athletic frame. Registered a 7.03 60-yard dash. Uses long arm action through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Reaches top velocity of 76 mph across the infield. Shows average hands. Needs to improve route to the baseball. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a high hand trigger. Shows a lot of movement with his hands in his load. Tends to lead to barring of his front arm. Starts open and uses a long stride.

Trey Willard, 3B/RHP, St. Charles HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-9, 180-pound prospect with thick, solid, build. Registered a 7.18 60-yard dash. In the field, he shows short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Shows good actions to the ball, but exchange gets long at times. Reached top velocity of 76 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a wide base. Tends to cast his hands in his load. Still shows strong hands quick bat speed. Displays some big pop in his bat. Lots of potential, but needs to clean up his load to help consistency. Overall, potential power bat if he puts it all together. On the mound, the righty shows some raw skills. Fastball sits 75-78 mph with some run to it. Curveball sits at 62 mph with gradual, 11/5 break. Shows some depth, but soft pitch. Changeup sits at 67-68 mph. Slows down arm action throw the pitch, but it shows some fading action.

Ty Gutierrez, RHP/IF, Defiance HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect. Registered a 7.24 60-yard dash. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph across the infield. Shows good hands and quick exchange. Overall good actions in the field. At the plate, the right-handed hitter dives in his stride. Front arm bars in his load, which creates some drag to his swing. Contact type hitter with backside production. On the mound, the right-handed hitter shows average arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 75-78 mph with some run. Curveball is erratic at 65-67 mph, and changeup has similar run to his fastball at 70-71 mph.

Tony Velasquez, LHP, Canfield HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 180-pound southpaw. Shows average arm action through ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 76-77 mph with straight action to it. Curveball shows late break at 68 mph while staying on one plane. Mostly spin to it. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 69-70 mph with similar movement to his fastball.

Zack Clark, 3B, Ayersville HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-11, 160-pound infield prospect. Registered a 8.00 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 73 mph. Tends to field the ball deep. At the plate, he starts with an open stance and in a crouch. Collapses on the backside. Swing can be long, but he consistently squares the ball up with pull tendencies in his swing.
