TOP 2013 PROSPECTS FROM 7/17/12 TOP PROSPECT SHOWCASE 

Sam Donko, RHP, Youngstown Ursuline HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 230-pound right-handed pitching prospect. Big, solid build with strong lower half. Shows short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Control should improve as he cleans up some balance issues. Fastball fluctuates between 84-88 mph, sitting at 86 mph most of the time. Shows good command of several off-speed pitches. Curveball sits 70-72 mph with late 11/5 break. Also uses a sharp slider that sits 71-72 mph. Changeup sits between 76-79 mph. It is thrown near fastball arm speed and shows some sink. 

Kyle Montell, RHP, Pickerington North HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-2, 184-pound right-handed pitcher. Looks the part. Uses quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 83-87 mph. Curveball sits 68-70 mph with gradual 12/6 break. Shows good depth to it. Also uses a 79-80 mph cutter with good downward bite. Changeup sits 72-75 mph. Tends to slow down arm action, but shows good arm side run.

Tyler Pagano, OF/RHP, Pickerington North HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-2, 195-pound two-way prospect. Registered a 6.86 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through an over the top arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 82 mph with carry on his accurate throws. Projects as a corner outfielder. Sets up with a wide stance and in a crouch. Uses fluid rhythm to his swing. Shows explosive bat speed. Consistently squares the ball up with power to all fields.

Tom Coon, IF/OF, Dublin Jerome HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 185-pound prospect. Registered a 7.02 60-yard dash. From the outfield he shows a top velocity of 82 mph. Likely projects as a corner guy in the outfield or the infield. From third, he shows short arm action and good quickness in his feet for his size. Reaches top velocity of 80 mph across the infield. At the plate, shows middle of the order potential. Uses a small leg kick to trigger his swing. Good use of his lower half with some torque in his swing. Quick into the zone with his hands. Shows solid contact with pull power. 

Jeremy Wei, RHP, Westerville South HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-5, 205-pound right-handed pitching prospect. Shows quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Shows some effort to his delivery. With his size and arm speed, he shows some projectability. His fastball sits at 83-84 mph. His curveball stays at 66-67 mph with gradual 11/5 break. Shows good command and depth to the pitch. Changeup sits at 75 mph and also uses a 71-73 mph cutter.

Kyle Lento, IF/C, Dublin Jerome HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 175-pound versatile prospect. Registered a 6.9 60-yard dash. In the infield, he shows quick feet and fluid actions. Posses the versatility to play either middle position. Uses short arm action and quick transfer to reach a top velocity of 82 mph across the infield. Behind the plate, he reaches a top velocity of 76 mph with pop times between 2.03-2.07. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and a crouch. Uses a high hand trigger. Contact/line drive type hitter. 

Christopher Tomshack, RHP, Elyria Catholic HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 178-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws from ¾ to high ¾ arm slot with quick arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 81-85 mph with arm side run. Doesn’t use a curveball, but relies on a 81 mph cutter. Shows a changeup at 73 mph with arm side fade. Also uses a 70-72 mph knuckleball with some tumble.

Cory Blessing, RHP, Mayfield HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses a high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Shows quick arm speed and long back arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 82-84 mph with some arm side run. His curveball sits 71-74 mph with 11/5 break, but lacks good depth. His changeup stays between 70-72 mph and is thrown near fastball arm speed while showing arm side run.

Greg Jacknewitz, LHP/1B, Bishop Watterson HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 185-pound prospect. Projects as a pitcher at the next level. The southpaw throws form a high ¾ arm slot. Doesn’t require much effort to his delivery. Fastball sits 79-81 mph with some natural cut, but velocity should jump with easy arm action. Curveball sits 65-68 with sweeping 1/7 break. Changeup stays at 71-72 mph. He throws it near fastball arm speed with some fade. Shows the ability to change speeds and throw several pitches for strikes. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Uses a long stride and tends to dive at the ball. Shows pull tendencies in his swing.

Zack Borsa, LHP/OF, McDowell HS (PA), Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect. Registered a 7.09 60-yard dash. In the outfield, he shows athletic actions. Reaches a top velocity of 83 mph with long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with an open stance. Tends to bar his arm in his load. Takes a flat path to the ball. He is a contact/line drive type hitter. On the mound, he uses quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 78-81 mph. Shows good command of a 65 mph curveball. Shows late 1/7 break with good depth. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed, but lacks consistent command at 63-66 mph.

Emerson Keppler, OF/RHP, Thomas Worthington HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-9, 160-pound athletic prospect. Registered a 6.86 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he throws from a low ¾ arm slot. Shows good velocity at 83 mph, but needs to clean up his mechanics to improve overall accuracy. At the plate, he starts with a closed stance. At times, he bars his arm in his load. Shows a fluid rhythm to swing. On the mound, he shows some raw skills. He comes from a low ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 78-81 with some arm side run. Curveball shows gradual 11/5 break at 65-66 mph and his changeup fluctuates between 68-70 mph. 

Dominic Tiberi, OF, Dublin Coffman HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 189-pound outfield prospect. Registered a 6.87 60-yard dash. From the outfield, the lefty uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reaches a top velocity of 79 mph. Shows athletic actions in the field. At the plate, he hits from the right side. Uses a slightly open stance with a short stride. Uses a short, compact swing. Can be a little stiff at times, but generates solid contact with pull power.



TOP UNDERCLASS PROSPECTS FROM 7/17/12 TOP PROSPECT SHOWCASE

Sam Ankrom, LHP/OF, Thomas Worthington HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 195-pound two-way prospect. Registered a 7.16 60-yard dash. Defensively, he likely projects as a corner outfielder. Uses long arm action while reaching a top velocity of 81 mph. At the plate, he starts with a closed stance. Swing gets a bit long at times which causes some bat drag. Currently a contact type hitter with some occasional pop on his bat. On the mound, the southpaw throws 83-84 mph from the stretch. His curveball is 62-64 mph with gradual 1/7 break. Shows some good depth. Changeup sits 67-69 mph with some fade.

Caleb Ferguson, LHP, West Jefferson, Class of 2014

6-foot-3, 215-pound southpaw. Displays raw potential at this stage. Throws from a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Uses a slow, deliberate rhythm to his delivery. Needs to improve overall repeatability of delivery, which could be aided by speeding up his lower half. Fastball sits 80-84 mph with some cut. His curveball fluctuates between 70-75 mph and shows a small 1/7 bite to it. His changeup stays between 75-77 mph but is thrown near fastball arm speed.

Brad Miller, IF/RHP, Jonathan Alder HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-9, 170-pound two-way prospect. Registered a 7.09 60-yard dash. Projects as a third baseman at the next level. Shows athletic actions with good hands and some fluidity to his footwork. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and uses a short stride. He gets good torque with his lower half and shows a fluid rhythm to his swing. On the mound, the righty throws through a ¾ arm slot. His delivery requires some effort. His fastball sits 77-79 mph while his curveball sits at 69 mph with tight 11/5 break. His changeup stays around 73 mph.

Danny Kirchner, IF/OF, Olentangy Liberty HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-10, 165-pound versatile prospect. Registered a 7.15 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he reaches a top velocity of 84 mph. in the infield, he shows quick feet, but needs to improve glovework. Reaches top velocity of 82 mph across the infield. At the plate he starts with a slight crouch and high hand trigger. Shows line drive type production.

Joey Chapman, C, Clark Shawnee HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 175-pound prospect. Registered a 7.21 60-yard dash. Defensively, he throws from a ¾ arm slot out of the crouch. Has a tendency to open early, which causes some accuracy issues. Reaches a top velocity of 69 mph with pop times between 2.01-2.22. At the plate, he shows advanced skills. The right-handed hitter uses rotational mechanics. Starts with a slightly open stance. His hands are quick into the zone. Shows line drive production with pull power. 

Tim Hoppe, C, Clyde HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-11, 160-pound catcher. Registered a 7.12 60-yard dash. Shows good footwork. Quick, compact transfer. Reaches top velocity of 70 mph out of the crouch. Consistent pop times between 2.01-2.02. Displays confident approach at the plate. Starts with slightly open stance and a short stride. Shows above average bat speed. Takes short, slightly uphill path to the ball. Surprising power for his size.

Aaron Straughsbaugh, IF, Dublin Scioto HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-9, 160-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.01 60-yard dash. Projects as a second baseman. Shows top velocity of 76 mph across the infield with long arm action. Can show stiffness at times in his actions, but shows good hands. At the plate, the left-handed hitter shows the ability to hit to all fields. Starts with a closed stance. Displays above average bat speed. Good contact type hitter.

Alex Rafeld, C/1B, Delaware Hayes HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect. Registered a 7.67 60-yard dash. At first, he moves around the bag well and shows some athleticism. Reaches top velocity of 78 mph on his throws. From the crouch, he reaches a top velocity of 74 mph. Tends to get wide in his stance. Pop times between 2.06-2.19. At the plate, the right handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Tends to drop the barrel in his load. Takes a flat path to the ball and creates some length to his swing.

Austin Adams, OF, Colonel Crawford HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 185-pound outfield prospect. Registered a 7.38 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a corner outfielder. Uses short arm action through over the top arm slot. Reaches top velocity of 85 mph with some carry. At the plate, he hits from the left-side. Starts with a closed stance. Shows average bat speed with a short path to the ball. Displays pull tendencies in his swing.

Ben Szmyczak, IF, Strongsville HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-11, 160-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.17 60-yard dash. In the infield, uses a high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Reaches top velocity of 70 mph on his throws. Shows average foot speed, but does a good job playing through the ball. At the plate, he shows some balance to his swing. Uses rotational mechanics. Uses a downward path to the ball. Line drive production with opposite field tendencies.

Brandon Schreiber, C, Wapakoneta HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 170-pound catching prospect. Registered a 7.27 60-yard dash. Shows good catch and receive skills with room for improvement. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph with pop times between 1.98-2.08. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a high hand trigger. Tends to bar his arm in his load, which creates some length to his swing. Shows average bat speed with line drive production.

Brendan Lange, C/OF, Strongsville HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-10, 165-pound catching prospect. Registered a 7.57 60-yard dash. Shows good catching and receive skills behind the dish. Reaches top velocity of 74 mph from the crouch with accurate throws. Pop time sits between 2.01-2.03. Also shows the versatility to play the outfield with athletic actions, a quick transfer, and top velocity of 81 mph on his throws. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with a short, compact swing that produces pull tendencies with solid contact.

Bryce Arledge, LHP, Unioto HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 200-pound southpaw. Throw from a deceptive ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits at 79-81 mph with some natural cut. Curveball sits at 69-70 mph with some small bite to it. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and sits at 73-75 mph with some fade. Velocity should improve as he learns to better use his lower half.

Chris Wooten, RHP/1B, Lancaster HS, Class of 2014

6-foot, 205-pound prospect. Uses a low ¾ arm slot on the mound. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 77-79 mph fastball with arm side run due to his low ¾ arm slot. Tends to get on the side of his 62-63 mph curveball, which creates spin, but lacks overall effective break. His changeup sits at 74 mph. He throws it near fastball arm speed with some arm side run.

Christopher Keck, IF, Hilliard Davidson HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 150-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.53 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a second baseman at the next level. Uses short, stiff arm action. Reached a top velocity of 72 mph across the infield. Needs to consistently play through the ball. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a closed stance. He is a contact type hitter that should improve his power as he develops physically.

Clayton Colvin, RHP, Dublin Jerome HS, Class of 2015

6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Shows average arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Tends to open the front side early. Fastball sits 77-79 mph. Velocity should continue to improve as he develops physically and better incorporates his lower half. His curveball shows 12/6 break at 66 mph. He also uses a 66-68 mph slider.

Cory Teachout, RHP, Medina HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 168-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses a high ¾ arm slot. Four seam fastball sits 79-82 mph while his 2 seam sits at 77 mph. His curveball is 65-66 mph with late 11/5 break. Also uses a 69-71 mph slider. He throws his changeup near fastball arm speed at 66-67 mph with some fade.

Davon Harris, IF, Westerville North HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 160-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.1 60-yard dash. In the field, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reaches a top velocity of 76 mph across the infield. Shows some athletic actions but lacks consistent fluidity. Hands are above average. Best suited for third base or second base. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance with a short stride. Uses a simple load and fluid rhythm to his swing. Shows some surprising pop in his swing.

Dakato Carraro, C, Gahanna Lincoln HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 160-pound catching prospect. Registered a 7.27 60-yard dash. From the crouch, he reaches a top velocity of 71 mph through an over the top arm slot. Pop times sat between 2.03-2.13. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a high hand trigger. Contact type hitter with pull tendencies in his swing.

Derek Hendrixson, IF/RHP, Centerville HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-9, 152-pound prospect. Registered a 7.26 60-yard dash. Shows athletic actions in the field with excellent body control. Shows softness in his hands and the ability to throw from all angles. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Tends to bar his front arm during his load. Takes a slightly uphill path to the ball. On the mound, he comes from an over the top arm slot with quick arm action. Velocity sits 78-80 mph with a 69-70 mph curveball and a 72 mph changeup.

Garrett Koutsopoulos, 3B/RHP, Vermillion HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect. Registered a 7.16 60-yard dash. In the field, he projects as a corner infielder. Uses long, stiff arm action to reach a top velocity of 74 mph. Needs to consistently play through the ball. At the plate, he starts with a wide, crouch in his stance. Shows some raw skills with pull power. 

Jacob Kaylor, RHP/1B, Olentangy Lewis Center HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect. Registered a 7.8 60-yard dash. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and uses a short stride and big load. Shows average bat speed. Big prospect with some raw power in his bat. On the mound, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Shows a choppy rhythm to his delivery. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 73-75 mph with some arm side run. Curveball sits at 63 mph with 11/5 break. Changeup stays at 70 mph with similar run to his fastball.

Jacob Mazak, RHP, Coventry HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws through an over the top arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball is straight at 78-79 mph. Curveball shows 12/6 breaking action at 62 mph. Also shows a 66 mph slider. His changeup tends to be straight as well at 68 mph.

Jaden Cleland, C, Springfield Northwestern HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-3, 195-pound catching prospect. Registered a 7.27 60-yard dash. Reaches top velocity of 77 mph from the crouch. Pop times fluctuate between 2.01-2.24. Should improve consistency as he shortens his transfer. Exchange tends to get long at times and shows a hitch. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Shows rotational mechanics with a big load. When he squares it up, shows solid contact with pull power.

Joseph Sadowski, LHP/1B, North Royalton HS, Class of 2013

6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way prospect. Registered a 7.74 60-yard dash. Moves well around the bag. Shows top velocity of 74 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly closed stance. Uses an easy, simple load with quick bat speed into the zone. Displays a fluid rhythm with line drive production. On the mound, the southpaw shows easy effort to his delivery through a ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits at 77-79 mph with some natural cut. His curveball sits at 65-66 mph with some small bite to it. His best off-speed pitch is 69-70 mph with some fade to it.

Kegan Lanter, C/OF, Thomas Worthington HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-8, 185-pound prospect. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 71 mph. Best suited for left field. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 65 mph with pop times between 2.17-2.35. At the plate, he shows a simple, compact swing. Doesn’t use a big load. Short and quick into the zone with surprising pop for his size.

Kevin Illich, IF/OF, Canal Winchester HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-9, 185-pound prospect. Registered a 7.02 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 79 mph. Needs to quicken his transfer and exchange. In the infield, he projects as a second base type. Shows good feet and hands with a top velocity of 76 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and in a crouch. Uses a short stride. Shows line drive production with opposite field tendencies. Contact type hitter.

Luke Albu, IF, Upper Arlington HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-7, 158-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.48 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a second baseman at the next level. Needs to improve overall quickness and arm strength. Reached a top velocity of 60 mph across the infield. At the plate, he hits from both side. Shows better use of his lower half from the right side with line drive production. From the left side, starts with a wide base and slight crouch. Lacks complete use of his lower-half from the left side.

Mason Birkbeck, RHP, Orrville HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses a slow, deliberate rhythm. Shows average arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 73-76 mph with some arm side run. His curveball stays at 62 mph with gradual 11/5 break. Tends to slow down his arm action. His changeup is 69 mph with some arm side run. 

Nick Thomas, IF/RHP, Dublin Jerome HS, Class of 2014

5-foot-11, 160-pound prospect. Registered a 7.42 60-yard dash. In the infield, he shows long arm action through a low ¾ arm slot. Arm action causes some accuracy issues. Shows 76 mph velocity across the infield. Needs to consistently play through the ball. At the plate, he sets up in a tall, narrow stance. Tends to bar his arm during load, which creates some length to his swing. Shows opposite field tendencies.

Patrick Raiff, IF, Carroll HS, Class of 2013

5-foot-8, 165-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.07 60-yard dash. In the field, he uses short arm action through a ¾ arm slot with a top velocity of 73 mph. Likely projects as a second baseman. Needs to consistently attack the ball and play through it. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts in a crouch. Shows excellent use of his lower half with good torque. Displays above average bat speed with good pull power in his bat.

Rob Fox, IF/RHP, Delta HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-2, 165-pound prospect. Registered a 7.54 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a third baseman at the next level. Uses long arm action through a low ¾ arm slot. Reaches top velocity of 77 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance with a small leg kick. Uses short, downward path to the ball. Doesn’t always achieve extension in his swing. On the mound, he shows a choppy rhythm to his delivery through a ¾ arm slot. Fastball velocity sits 82-84 mph. Needs to continue improving command of off-speed pitches. Curveball is 71-72 mph with a small bite to it. Changeup is 71-73 mph with occasional arm side run.

Ryan Curtis, C/RHP, Westerville North HS, Class of 2014

6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect. Registered a 7.76 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he needs to improve his glove to hand exchange. Tends to get long at times. Reaches a top velocity of 69 mph from the crouch with a pop time between 2.00-2.24. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows some raw power. He uses a slightly open stance with a short stride. Uses quick hands that help generate some pull pop in his bat. On the mound, he shows average arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits 78-81 mph. His curveball is 68-71 mph with 11/5 break. Shows decent depth. His changeup lacks movement and overall command at 70 mph.

Ryan Davis, RHP, Triad HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses ¾ to low ¾ arm slot. Shows long arm action with a max effort delivery. At times, he shows balance issues. Fastball sits 73-77 mph. His curveball sits 75-67 mph with 11/5 break. He uses a split-finger fastball thrown near fastball arm speed at 67-69 mph. It shows some tumbling action.

Wesley Allen, OF/3B/RHP, Olmsted Falls HS, Class of 2013

6-foot, 200-pound prospect with solid build. Registered a 7.19 60-yard dash. From the outfield, shows short arm action and top velocity of 78 mph with tail to his throws. At third base, he throws from a low ¾ arm slot with a top velocity of 74 mph. Shows average hands and feet. At the plate, he uses a short stride. Very simple load with short path to the ball. Shows some pop in his bat. On the mound, the righty uses a low ¾ arm slot with some effort to his delivery. At this stage, shows raw skills on the mound. Fastball sits 78-81 mph with some arm side run. Curveball is 70-71 mph with gradual 11/5 break. Changeup lacks command at 72-73 mph.

Zachary Santoro, OF/IF, Clinton Massie HS, Class of 2015

5-foot-11, 170-pound infield prospect. Registered a 7.47 60-yard dash. Shows good action from the outfield. Shows long, loose arm action through a high ¾ slot. Reached top velocity of 79 mph. In the infield, he shows a long transfer and some stiffness in his actions. Seems more natural in the outfield. Reached top velocity of 70 mph. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Shows good use of his lower half and quick bat speed.
