Oklahoma Player of the Week: SS Brett Owen

Player of the Week
The inaugural PBR Oklahoma Player of the Week award will go to Blanchard senior shortstop and leadoff hitter Brett Owen for his outstanding performance at the plate last week for the Lions. Owen, a Seminole State commit and ranked No. 27 in the Oklahoma 2017 class, helped Blanchard go undefeated last week by hitting .818 (9-for-11) with two doubles, two home runs, six stolen bases, and six walks.

(6A) Ryan Westerhoff, an uncommitted  senior RHP for Deer Creek, pitched 10.2 innings last week. Westerhoff didn’t give up a single run on four hits and struck out  24 batters while only walking two. Westerhoff is ranked No. 54 in the Oklahoma 2017 class.

(5A)-Having two players of the week in one class will be very rare, but the two players below posted stats and achievements that were impossible to rank one over the other.

Tanner Sparks, a senior infielder and RHP from Shawnee, made major contributions on the mound and at the plate this week. The 6-foot-1, 185 pound Oklahoma State commit hit .615 (8-for-13) with a double, home run, and seven RBI’s. On the mound, Sparks was 2-0 with 16 punch outs and only four walks. Sparks has been a big part of Shawnee’s undefeated season and their current ranking of 15th best high school team in the country by Baseball America.

Jonathan Amos, an uncommitted RHP and senior for Northwest Classen, has had himself an unforgettable start to the year on the mound. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound pitcher threw a no-hitter with 10 punch outs in a run-rule shortened five inning game. Though it was not in the same week, it must also be noted that Amos threw another no-hitter four day previous, posting 14 strikeouts in that affair.

(3A) Brody Gibson, a senior RHP/C for Metro Christian Academy, was a two-way stand out this week. The Oral Roberts commit hit .500 with four doubles and a triple. On the mound, Gibson also picked up a win, striking out five.  

(2A) Zack Matthews, a senior RHP and catcher for Wellston, put up big numbers on the mound and at the dish this past week. In two starts, Matthews went 1-0, throwing 12 innings, allowing just one earned run, striking out 24 without walking a single batter. Matthews is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound Oklahoma commit that is ranked No. 5 in the Oklahoma 2017 class.

(1A) S’Mauri Abram, a freshman RHP/OF from Oklahoma Christian Academy, had a memorable first ever high school mound appearance. Against a 5A club, Abram threw a no-hitter in a run-rule shorted five inning game, striking out eight.  Abram also hit .286 on the week with one RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base.

(B) Brooks Red, a junior first baseman for Arapaho-Butler, was productive at the plate this week. Red batted .500  with a home run and six RBI’s in three games.

Honorable Mentions
Hunter Bowers, an uncommitted sophomore for Crescent, hit .706 (12-for-17) with six doubles, 11 RBI’s, and seven runs scored. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound RHP/INF only stuck out once during the week.

Christian Campbell, an uncommitted senior for Pryor hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles and five RBI’s.  The 182- pound OF/1B is also a wrestling and football start for Pryor.

Ty Dudley
, a junior for Oklahoma Christian Academy, was another two-way stand out this week. Dudley hit .444 with four RBI’s and one run scored. On the mound, he gave up one run on three hits while striking out 12 and walking only two in a complete game win.

Kris Elerick
, an uncommitted 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior for Checotah, hit .538 (7-for-13) with two triples, a double, a home run, five RBI’s, 10 runs scored, and six stolen bases. 

Caleb Kulbeth, an uncommitted junior for Central Marlow, had an outstanding four games this week. At the dish, Kulbeth batted .714 (10-for-14) with two doubles, six RBI’s, six runs scored, and a stolen base. On the mound, Kulbeth  earned the win against No. 16ranked Hammon, not allowing a run on three hits while striking out seven and not surrendering a walk.

Josiah Lovett
, an uncommitted junior for Crescent, hit .500 (10-for-20) this week. The catcher had three RBI’s and eight runs scored.

Hayden Minton
, an uncommitted sophomore for Collinsville, threw five innings against Norman, earning a win. Miton struck out ten and walked only two.  

Braxton Pennington
, an uncommitted junior for  Grove, put up big numbers at the plate and on the mound this week. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound RHP/3B threw nine innings and went 2-0, including a complete game  against a talented Wagoner team.  On the week, Pennington did not allowing a single run on three hits and striking out 13.  Offensively, he went 3-for-7 with a double, three RBI’s and three walks.

Chris Read, an uncommitted five-foot- 11, 190-pound senior RHP for Checotah, went 2-0 on the mound this week striking out 18 and posting a 3.07 ERA. 

Dylan Russell, a senior catcher for  Collinsville, batted .666 (12-for-18) on the week with a home run, triple, and double. The Rogers St. commit is ranked No. 168 in the Oklahoma 2017 class.

Eric Taylor Jr.
, a senior 1B/RHP from Midwest City High School, hit .556 with a home run, five RBI’s, six walks, and an OBP of .714  in four games this week. The NOC Enid commit also won his only start on the mound, going five innings, allowing  one unearned run on three hits, striking out seven, and not surrendering a walk.  Taylor also had the go ahead RBI in the eighth inning win against Collinsville. Taylor is ranked No. 53 in the Oklahoma 2017 class. 

Kenny Yetter, a senior catcher for Deer Creek, batted .538 in 13 at bats with an OBP of .625 this week with three doubles, a home run, and seven RBI’s.  The 6-foot-1, 200-pound New Orleans commit is ranked No. 28 in Oklahoma’s 2017 class.
