PBR OK Player of the Week: RHP/C Angel Gonzales

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The fourth PBR Oklahoma Player Of The Week goes to Angel Gonzales, a sophomore RHP/C for class B Medford. Gonzales hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs, including a walk-off grand slam. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound athlete also posted nine runs scored, nine RBI’s, three walks, and only struck out one time. On the mound, the right-hander threw 9.1 innings in total for the week, earning three wins, giving up just three earned runs, striking out 22, and walking eight.

(6A) In a highly contested class this week, Corey Creek, an uncommitted senior outfielder for  Choctaw, gets the nod. Creek batted .667 (10-for-15) with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. A right-handed hitting cleanup hitter, Creek also drew five walks and did not punch out. The right fielder did not make an error and had an outfield assist.

(5A) Christian Campbell, an uncommitted senior for Pryor, hit .600 (9-for- 15) this week with two doubles, two  triples, two home runs, six RBI’s, and seven runs scored. The three sport standout has had a great season to this point.  

(4A) Matt Yates, currently ranked No. 91 in Oklahoma’s 2018 class and an uncommitted for 5-foot-9, 185-pound junior outfielder for Cushing. Yates  hit .875 (7-for-8) for the week with two doubles, a walk, five RBI’s and scored four runs .

(3A) Ethan Wayland, and uncommitted junior for Purcell, had a big week on the mound. On Monday, Wayland threw a run-rule shortened five inning no-hitter against a ranked 3A  striking out seven. On Friday, the righ-hander earned another win against a 4A opponent, going six innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound arm is putting together a solid year.

(2A)Josiah Lovett, an uncommitted a junior RHP/UTIL for Crescent, hit .611 (11-for-18) last week with 5 stolen bases. Lovett helped lead his team to the championship game of the Hennessey Tournament.

(A)Dustin Waldorf, an uncommitted junior from Sterling, hit .454 (5-for-11) with an impressive four home runs. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound outfielder also had seven RBI’s in his for games last week.

Honorable Mentions

Dylan Bierman, currently ranked No. 121 in Oklahoma’s 2017 class, is an uncommitted RHP for Metro Christian. Bierman collected the win in his start last week, striking out eight.

Jakob Brandenberger, a 6-foot, 190-pound freshman pitcher for Putnam City West, tossed a complete game allowing just one earned run on six hits, but got the hard luck loss.  

Chase Brim, a sophomore for Caney, hit .500 (10-for-20) with three doubles, two triples and a home run. Brim also had seven runs scored, four RBI, and five walks.

DJ Calvert, currently ranked No. 78 in Oklahoma’s 2017 class and an NOC Enid commit for Edmond Memorial. Calvert  hit .583 (7-for-12) last week with three RBI’s against front line pitching. The senior 6-foot, 165-pound shortstop has had a big year to date for the Bulldogs.

DeClaudio Irvin, currently ranked No. 17 in Oklahoma’s 2017 class and an Arkansas-Little Rock signee. Irvin hit .500 with two doubles, three triples, seven RBI, eight runs scored, and seven stolen bases. The 6-foot, 170-pound junior also walked five times.

Kohl Franklin, currently ranked No. 29 in Oklahoma’s 2018 class is an uncommitted junior RHP/MIF for Broken Arrow. Franklin recorded a dominant performance against a very talented Stillwater offence this week. Franklin allowed just one run on three hits, one walk, and struck out nine. Right-handed hitter also delivered the walk-off hit in the bottom of seventh. Franklin has had a terrific year on the mound, and we will likely see him again on this list.

Trent Gagan, a sophomore for Caney, hit .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored, five walks, and an impressive 12 RBI’s.

Josh Garrett , a junior at Regent Preparatory School,  put up big numbers on the mound and at the dish this week. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound  third baseman  hit .429 (3-for-7) with a double, five runs scored, two RBI’s and seven walks. On the mound, Garrett earned two wins, throwing thirteen innings, striking out 11 and posting a .538 ERA.

Hunter Hines, an unsigned senior arm for Caney did not allow an earned run in six innings, giving up just one hit, striking out 14, and not surrendering a walk.

Josh Jetton, an uncommitted 5-foot-9, 170-pound junior RHP/SS for Little Axe, was outstanding on the mound in two starts for Little Axe this week. The combined stats from his two complete against Luther and Bridge Creek were 13 innings, three earned runs, and 19 punch outs, giving him an ERA of 1.62 for the week.

Orin McGee, a senior LHP/OF for Duke, made an impact on both sides of the ball last week. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound lefty tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, one walk, and struck out seven. At the dish, Orin hit .400 (4-for-10) with a triple, two walks, two RBI’s and four stolen bases.   (SR), 6'1", 160lbs, LHP/OF SNU prospect (offered roster spot).

Brady Papke, and uncommitted senior RHP/OF for Metro Christian, hit .600 (6-for-10) on the week with a double. Papke also won a game for the Patriots on the mound.

Zayne Porter is a 5-foot-6 130-pound freshman right-hander for Marietta. In his first career varsity start, Porter threw a complete game shutout in a six inning run-rule shortened game, allowing six hits, and striking out seven.

Foster Roy, currently ranked No. 35 in Oklahoma’s 2017 class and a Richmond signee. The LHP/OF for Metro Christian hit .556 with a double, four RBI’s, and five walks. Roy was also dominant is his start, earning the win and striking out 10.
