PGBA Invitational at OU: Day 4 Scout Notes

PBR OK will be covering the PGBA Invitational at OU for the 15U-17U age groups all weekend long. This Diamond King Tournament features some of the best summer travel teams from across the country as well as the top teams in OK. Each day, we will release scout notes on the top performers in each game. Top performers are players who show outstanding physical ability and produce in the game. Here are the notes from the six games PBR OK attended on day four.

MWE Savage 16U vs Evoshield Canes TX 16U Black

Blake Robertson, RHP/3B, Edmond Santa Fe HS (2019)- A 6-foot-4, 183-pound frame, very long limbs, and wiry strength with plenty of room to add size and strength. Offensively, a left-handed hitter, line drive approach, showed pop to all fields. Hits from a slightly open, knock-kneed, balanced set-up. Short and flat to the ball, high finish, shows bat speed and hand strength. On the mound, uses an very simple, abbreviated, side-on wind-up. Throws from a ¾ slot with full and loose are circle that will gain strength as Robertson fills out.  Fastball keeps its plane, at 83-84 and touches 85. Slider is short at times, but will show depth with 10/4 shape at 77-79 mph. Changeup shows advanced depth and fade at times, 76-77 mph. An advanced strike thrower. In the game, gave up two early runs then threw up five consecutive zeros.

Canes
Christian McCoy, RHP, Tomball HS (2019)- Around 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame with long arms. Works from an athletic, slightly up-tempo delivery with a big arm circle that extends towards first base, coming through in a ¾ slot with some looseness. Fastball sits 83-85 and touches 86 mph. Breaking ball shows slurve shape at 70-72 mph. In the game, held an elite young offense scoreless through five.

Sandlot 16U Ritter vs Texas Aces 16U

Conner Beichler, SS, Owasso HS (2019) - A 5-foot-10, 155-pound quick twitch athlete with wiry strength. Defensively, shows advanced feet, soft and consistent hands, and an excellent clock. Shows the ability to throw from multiple slots with some arm strength, carry, and accuracy. Offensively, the switch hitter shows a short and simple stroke with a flat bat path and middle of the field approach from both side, currently more polished with more pop from the right-side. Gets out of the box and down the line very well, with ability to take an extra base.

Lubbock Baseball Academy 17U vs SWE 17U Senf

Bryce Weisinger, OF/RHP, Lake Travis HS (2018)- A 6-foot-2, 160-pound long and athletic frame with quick twitch actions. Offensively, the right-handed batter hits from a balanced, relaxed, slightly open set-up with a slight crouch and the bat resting on his shoulder. Takes a short stride with a slight leg lift and uses a small load. Swing is very short and compact to the ball, showing an all fields approach. Weisinger is an elite runner on the bases and in the outfield. Defensively, gets good jumps, takes excellent routes, and shows high end closing speed. The arm strength is advanced with accuracy and carry. Had an RBI double and a web gem in the game.

Kyle Hawkins, Util, Round Rock HS (2018)- A 5-foot-11, 170-pound lean frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from a wide, knock-kneed stance, uses a knee-knock leg kick for timing. Shows a middle to pull approach with some lift. Had an RBI double and RBI single to tie the game late for SWE. Defensively, made a web gem at third base an showed a high IQ.

LBA
Jace Piepkorn, SS/OF, Colvis HS (2018)- A 6-foot, 160-pound lean frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a balanced, slightly open set-up with rhythm in his hands. Takes a short strike and is short to the ball with a flat path, showing an all fields approach. An above average runner.  Played centerfield in this one, showing confident actions and athleticism.

Sandlot Ritter 16U vs Sandlot Wrona 16U

Bryce Osmond, SS/RHP, Jenks HS (2019) -An Oklahoma State commit.  A 6-foot-2, 170-pound long and athletic frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a back leg heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands and uses a slight knee-knock leg kick to load. Shows a slightly uphill bat path with a middle to pull approach with bat speed, leverage, good hand eye. Very good runner.  Defensively, Osmond played third in this one, showing excellent feet, soft hands, advanced range, and an accurate, elite arm with carry. Shows all the tools to play SS at the next level.

Wrona
James Dunlap, SS/RHP, Bishop Kelley HS (2019) - A 6-foot-1, 165-pound proportional build. Offensively, the right-handed batter hits from a relaxed, upright, slightly open, back leg heavy set-up. Uses a smooth load and moderate stride with a slightly up hill bat path. Defensively, shows bouncy actions with above average hands and feet. Throws from multiple slots with arm strength and accuracy. On the mound, use a simple and deliberate delivery. Arm action is short and clean coming through a high-3/4 slot with quickness. Fastball keeps its plane at 82-83 and touches 84 mph. Curveball shows big 12/6 shape at 61-62 mph. Changeup shows fade at 71-72 mph. Consistent strikes.

MWE Seng 15U vs Texas Colts Pena 15U

Jon Bay, Util, Shattuck HS (2020) – A 5-foot-11, 165-pound athletic frame with some strength. Offensively, the right-handed batter hits from a slightly open, athletic set-up with rhythm in his hands and uses a leg kick for timing. Shows a middle to pull approach with some lift and strength in his swing. Had an RBI double off the left-center field wall in the game. Defensively, played third base in this one, showing advanced hands and arm strength along with developing footwork.

Jace Bohrofen, OF, Westmoore HS (2020) - A 6-foot-1, 175-pound physically advanced build with strength. Offensively, a left-handed hitter with an all fields, line drive approach with pop. Hits from an upright, relaxed, balanced set-up, hands have good rhythm in front of his chest. Uses a small load, moderate stride, and shows off very quick hands, flat to contact with a high finish, creates consistent backspin. Hit an opposite field double in the game. Defensively, shows confident and clean actions in the outfield.  

Colts
Korson Hasting, 1B, Churchill HS (2020) – A physically advanced frame with some strength. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an open, back leg heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands and uses moderate leg kick load. Hasting is very short to the ball and keeps the bat in the zone for a long time, allowing him to hit to all fields with some pop. Had an RBI single in the game, and made hard contact in multiple at bats.

Cole Mixon, C, Kerrville HS (2020) - A physically advance 6-foot, 180-pound frame. Defensively, stands out behind the plate as an above average receiver with a clean transfer and strong arm with accuracy. Threw out two would be base stealers in the game. Offensively, the right-handed hitter shows strength in the box.  Had two hits in the game, including a game winning 2 RBI double.
