Before the selection process, plenty of rankings and lists are released. They may all have merit, but are essentially meaningless once the countdown begins and major league teams actually start to make their choices. Picks vary based on signability, slot values, pre-draft agreements, availability and more.

But it’s hard not to follow along and get caught up in the hype, especially if you’re one of the players at the top of those lists, like 18-year-old outfielder Demi Orimoloye. Most people who know him were shocked that his name wasn’t called on the first day of the draft – within the first two rounds – eventually selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round, 121st overall, on Tuesday.
