Tournament 12 at the Rogers Centre: Game Six

By Chris Kemlo
PBR Ontario Scouting Director

Ontario Green seemed rested and focused for their 3:30 pm game against Atlantic. They came ready to play as Ontario sent all nine hitters in their lineup to the plate in the first inning. On the mound, Green rolled out a pitching staff of giants as no prospect measured under 6-foot-4. Green won by a score of 8-2 as they look poised to make a run to the championship round of four.

Player Notes

Ryan Rijo, 1B, Ontario Blue Jays, 2016

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound left-handed hitting first baseman led the attack for Green by hitting the first homerun of any Ontario player. Rijo laced a no doubter off the seats in the 100 level to straight away right field in the fourth inning. Rijo displays good timing with an aggressive approach at the plate. Rijo is a strong left-handed hitter who doesn’t get cheated during his at bats. Rijo has good rhythm with his hands in the box and generates good bat speed through the zone. Rijo finished the day 2-3 with a homerun and a double, 2 RBI’s.

Tony Hrynkiw, C, Ontario Blue Jays, 2015

Listed at 5-foot-10, 200-pounds, the backstop for Ontario Green contributed with a 2-3 day at the plate with two singles, a walk, and two RBI’s. Hrynkiw showed good plate coverage and showed he can stay inside the ball while going up the middle. Hrynkiw was a 1.95 pop time on scout day.

Cole White, RHP, Ontario Blue Jays, 2015

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound righty looked as if he has been working hard to improve his mechanics over the last month or so. White, who in the past has been known to fall off hard to the first base side showed better angles to the plate, allowing him to make quality pitches in the strike zone. White topped out at 84 with his fastball, showed command with his breaking ball as the first five he threw were all for strikes. White ended up striking out six over three innings while issuing two walks and one earned run.

Austin Shields, RHP, Great Lake Canadians, 2015

Shields was has been the guy everyone was waiting to see this week, as he has been virtually unknown up until these past few weeks. PBR New York Dan Cevette saw him at a showcase and passed his info along. What a few weeks it has been for the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder. Shields went two innings, showing a clean delivery with proper arm action. The right was up to 87 on the gun, his slider was 76 and will improve with proper instruction and aptitude. With his delivery and the ability to repeat, Shields has quickly turned himself into a guy.

Noteables

Darren Shred, 2015 catcher and Team Canada member, took one at-bat in the first inning before heading off to catch some sleep as he had just arrived from Mexico. Shred didn’t dissapoint as he singled up the middle to put two runs on the board for Green in the first.

Miles Gordon made a heads up play on a flyball he caught in centerfield. With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Gordon saw the runner tagging from 1st and fired a perfect throw to easily double up the runner who tagged up. Gordon is a toolsy player who has a ton of upside and athleticism. He is currently a 2015 uncommitted grad, which shouldn't last for long.
