Tournament 12 at the Rogers Centre: Game Seven

By Chris Kemlo
PBR Ontario Scouting Director

Ontario Black (11) vs. PRAIREs (6)

It was Ontario Black’s second game of the day, and after tying their morning game against Quebec, it was a must win for the team of prospects from across Ontario.

Back in the lineup and hitting in the cleanup position was Demi Orimoloye, the top rated Canadian prospect for next June’s draft. On the mound was Orimoloye’s teammate from Ottawa, 6-foot-8 RHP Matt Ianni.

Black put the game out of reach with a 9 run third, while Great Lake Canadian RHP Brett Stenger preserved the win. The game ended with a final score of 11-6 in five and half innings of play due to the time limit.

Player notes

Josh Naylor, 1B, Ontario Blue Jays, 2015

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound, power hitting first baseman went 2-3 on the day with two RBI’s, a walk, run scored, and a stolen base. Naylor continued to hit the ball hard as the ball jumped off his bat and was very loud on contact. Naylor is noticeably quiet his his hands at the pate, getting them in good position to fire as he lets his strength and quickness do the rest. Naylor should be a top round pick come next June. He is currently uncommitted.

Zach Fascia, C, Brampton Royals, 2016

Fascia drove in three runs while hitting in the six spot for team Black. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound, left-handed hitting catcher was 2-3 with a triple and a base hit, while alsobeing hit by a pitch and scoring a run. Fascia is part of a deep catchers class at T12, but with his defensive abilities and arm strength Fascia has held his own, if not led the pack these first couple days at the Rogers Center. Fascia has definitely intrigued some recruiters and should be a high follow guy as a 2016 grad.

Brett Stenger, RHP, Great Lake Canadians, 2015

The native from Kingsville, Ontario. Stenger recorded the final nine outs for Ontario Black. A year ago Stenger was playing in his local house league. Now, he’s pitching to the best hitters in Canada on a MLB mound. Stenger was up to 88 with his fastball while breaking off a hard curveball which could be classified as a slurve. Some command issues with his fastball came into play at times, but with small corrections, Stenger should be fine. His arm works, some quickness, clean separation, and creates good tight spin on his breaking ball. Stenger will only get better and could easily be in the 90’s after some hard work over the winter. His future looks bright.

Noteables

+ Eric Senior continued to stay hot going 2-3 with a double and three runs scored.

+ RHP Matt Ianni battled over his three innings of work, striking out seven, while limiting the damage to four runs.

+ Orimoloye looked great by driving in two runs, scoring two runs, and swiping two bags while making a strong throw to the plate where he had a runner D.O.A. but Ontario’s Andy Yerzy couldn’t hold on to the ball.
