We keep it on the eastern side of the state and make District XI installment number eleven of our district preview articles, the main component of our season preview content, which will run for three weeks up to the first official competition date for PIAA schools on March 20. Each article includes a list of top prospects from amongst the cohort of schools; for example, today is a top eleven in District XI. Each article also contains write-ups of a number of teams in the cohort.

We have received inquiries regarding how we decide which teams to detail. A team having or not having its own paragraph in the article is less an indication of what type of season we expect it to have and more a function of how much information we are able to compile. For example, if we have not seen a team in person (there are over 600 baseball-playing high schools in the state), stats are not available on-line, and a school district spam filter gobbled up our e-mails to the coach that contained the questionnaire, we might not have enough information to write a full paragraph on that school.

Class A

In the past four seasons, Tri-Valley has alternated district titles with losses in the championship game. Having fallen to Schuylkill Haven Area last spring, 1st-team all-Area pitcher Hunter Bordner (60.1 IP, 53 H, 23 BB, 78 K) hopes to continue the pattern and lead his squad to a Bulldogpile this May. Some development from his staffmates will be necessary, as no other returning pitcher logged more strikeouts than walks. Four line-up regulars graduated, but Bordner (.391 AVG, .536 OBP, 16 BB vs 8 K, 12 XBH) and junior outfielder Chase Schaeffer (.342 AVG, .442 OBP, 13 BB vs 11 K) lead a group of six returners who saw significant playing time last year.

Five regular starters, including four who hit over .400, have graduated, leaving Marian Catholic with no returning seniors who recorded more than seven plate appearances. A trio of juniors -- 2nd-team all-Area catcher K.J. Snerr (.463 AVG, 20 SB), shortstop Dante Salerno (.455 AVG, 531 OBP, 9 BB vs 2 K, 20 SB), and utilityman Ryan Hinkle (.373 AVG, .521 OBP, 17 BB vs 3 K, 13 SB) -- should be joined as primary run-producers by two sophomores coming off solid rookie campaigns: first baseman Josh Inama (.333 AVG, .455 OBP, 7 BB vs 6 K) and outfielder Daniel Keer (.344 AVG, 450 OBP, 7 BB vs 3 K). Likewise with the offense, the pitching staff graduated its top two arms, and will likely turn to Hinkle, Salerno (right), and Keer, all of whom logged between 12 and 18.2 innings, to step into larger roles. [Post-publication update: senior Angelo Maskornick transferred in from Shenandoah Valley, where he was the team's leader in home runs and stolen bases.]

Williams Valley graduated 84% of its innings and does not return a pitcher who logged more than 11.1 innings or who recorded more strikeouts than walks last spring. The offense is slightly less in flux, despite the graduation of five major contributors, with three line-up holdovers led by senior infielder Kenny Ross (.339 AVG, .486 OBP, 15 BB vs 10 K).

Pius X welcomes back two-thirds of its regular starting line-up, led by the senior trio of Brody Plante (.381 AVG, .494 OBP), Cameron Kichline (.410 AVG, .500 OBP, 8 BB vs 5 K, .655 SLG), and Point Park-bound Alex Farina (.377 AVG, .443 OBP, .508 SLG; right). Senior Hunter Beck (29 IP, 32 H, 26 BB, 23 K) is the only pitcher to have logged more than 8.1 innings last spring for the Royals.

Two of the top four innings eaters return for Shenandoah Valley in the persons of junior Ian McCole (28 IP, 47 H, 26 BB, 43 K) and senior Nick Gurski (26 IP, 38 H, 24 BB, 28 K). More than half of the offense returns for the Blue Devils, led by Gurski (.446 AVG, .537 OBP), McCole (.387 AVG, .441 OBP, 6 BB vs 5 K), and senior Angelo Maskornick, the team's leading returning home run and stolen base threat. [Post-publication errata: Maskornick has transferred to Marian Catholic.]

Lincoln Leadership Academy only graduated three from its regular line-up, but suffered a major blow when leading hitter Michael Cesar transferred to William Allen for his senior season. That leaves juniors Erick Reyes (.356 AVG, .434 OBP) and Angel Rosa-Rivera (.294 AVG, .455 OBP) as the leading returning hitters for the Lions. Reyes (28.1 IP, 34 H, 47 BB, 39 K) and fellow junior Yensi Morales (29.1 IP, 59 H, 11 BB, 30 K) led coach Brian Godshall's staff in innings pitched last season.

Class AA

With the graduation of Colonial League MVP Paul Roth, Drew-bound Honorable Mention RHP/3B Zach Luke (69.2 IP, 37 H, 20 BB, 61 K; right), returns to front the pitching staff for league and district champion Notre Dame Green Pond. Senior LHP Andrew Valkenburg (32 IP, 35 H, 23 BB, 40 K) and sophomore RHP Brandon Moffitt are the most likely candidates to soak up Roth's innings. Luke (.329 AVG, .471 SLG, 8 SB) and junior 2nd-team shortstop Eric Santiago (.429 AVG) will spark coach Mike Bedics' offense, which graduated the middle part of its line-up and will turn to senior outfielder Joe Fedrizzi and senior first baseman Pat Davis for increased production.

Offensive attrition will have senior Honorable Mention all-Area infielder Logan Levan (.375 AVG, .453 OBP, 8 BB vs 6 K) and senior outfielder Kobe D'Agostino (.261 AVG, .346 OBP, 10 BB vs 6 K, 11 SB) leading an otherwise experienced Pine Grove Area line-up. Senior first baseman Zach Boltz and junior infielders Dilan Smith and Dylan Brown are among an group of inexperienced position players looking to make an impact. Coach Keith Lehman's pitching staff provides a little more stability, as senior 2nd-team all-Area pitcher Austin Fick (49.1 IP, 46 H, 23 BB, 56 K) and D'Agostino (31 IP, 22 H, 22 BB, 46 K) return as a right-left duo atop the rotation.

Only four pitchers logged innings for Salisbury Township last season, which means the Falcons will need to develop some depth behind junior Chad Cooperman (41.1 IP, 47 H, 6 BB, 37 K; right) and senior Evan Kulig (33 IP, 26 H, 9 BB, 27 K), while also shoring up a defense that contributed to 29 of the team's 68 runs allowed (43%) on the season being unearned. Two-thirds of a productive starting line-up returns, led by Colonial League 1st-team shortstop Kulig (.476 AVG, .547 OBP, 11 BB vs 8 K, .650 SLG), Honorable Mention second baseman Cooperman (.418 AVG, .494 OBP, 11 BB vs 4 K), and senior Honorable Mention catcher Chase Rogers (.359 AVG, .562 SLG).

For those who like southpaws, close your eyes and point to a game on the North Schuylkill schedule, as the Spartans will feature three junior LHP at the top of their rotation: Honorable Mention all-Area selection Murray (36.2 IP, 32 H, 22 BB, 42 K), Bobby Grigas (football quarterback who rarely pitched in 2014 due to injury, but posted a 24.1 IP, 22 H, 15 BB, 19 K line as a freshman), and C.J. Steinhilber (4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 BB, 7 K). Grigas (.353 AVG, .511 OBP, 9 BB vs 2 K) and Murray (.321 AVG, .535 SLG) will also power coach Nick Brayford's offense, with assistance from sophomore catcher Chris Burke (.333 AVG, .460 OBP, 9 BB vs 8 K, .509 SLG; right) and senior designated hitter Alex Hummel (.368 AVG, .561 SLG).

Schuylkill Haven Area rode the right arm of all-Area Pitcher of the Year Behm (91 IP, 78 H, 13 BB, 122 K), who logged more innings than the rest of the pitching staff combined, to the state semifinals in class A last season. As the Hurricanes reclassify up to AA, they also return two of the other three arms to see significant innings: seniors Danny Blugis (38.2 IP, 49 H, 15 BB, 37 K) and Mike Ulsh (27 IP, 26 H, 7 BB, 17 K). Two-thirds of the full-time line-up is also back, led by senior 1st-team all-Area outfielder Zavier Webb (.370 AVG, .482 OBP, 18 BB vs 10 K, 31 SB), senior 2nd-team all-Area infielder Ryan Fink (.341 AVG, .523 SLG, 17 SB), Franklin & Marshall-bound catcher Blugis (.341 AVG, .472 OBP, 19 BB vs 12 K, 11 SB; right) and Behm (.364 AVG, .474 OBP, 15 BB vs 12 K).

With the loss of Aaron Fritz, the Battlin' Miners top pitcher and hitter, to graduation, Minersville Area may turn to a committee approach to replace his production. Junior 2nd-team all-Area LHP Dylan Stephen (46.2 IP, 44 H, 23 BB, 39 K) is the leading candidate to assume the role of ace, while junior Ryan Nettles (19 IP, 21 H, 6 BB, 15 K) and senior Zack Brown (15.1 IP, 16 H, 6 BB, 10 K) should have the opportunity to log more innings. While the line-up only has three holes to fill, those holes are from the three hitters who led the team in extra base hits last spring. Junior shortstop Chris Leshko (.373 AVG, .515 OBP, 20 BB vs 18 K) and junior outfielder Jon McBreen (.348 AVG) are the top returning hitters for coach Del Hauck.

Competing in the Colonial League for the first time, Moravian Academy will rely on a large group of seniors to stay in games. Coach Chris Eckman will turn to senior catcher Marshall Hanyon (.457 AVG) to power the offense and shepherd the pitching staff, which will be led by senior RHP Jacob Schippell.

First-year Northern Lehigh coach Greg King inherits a young roster with limited varsity experience. That being said, the pitching staff will be led by the senior RHP duo of Josh Hamm and John Taylor. The Bulldogs offense will be paced by senior Colonial League Honorable Mention third baseman Zach Moll (right) and junior outfielder Zach Rex.

A big junior class, as well as competing against similar-sized schools in Division 3 of the Schuylkill League (as opposed to the larger schools in Division 1), could help Panther Valley withstand the loss of six starters to graduation. Senior catcher Matt Buss, a three-year starter, tore his ACL during football season, but is hopeful of a return to the diamond. He will be joined in the Panthers line-up by junior infielder Darren Goida, junior outfielders Anthony Vavra and Matt Hudicka, and sophomore infielder Anthony Micholick. Those four, all RHPs, will also be the primary pitchers on coach John Cooper's staff.

The junior duo of catcher Nolan Fegley (.429 AVG, .507 OBP) and utilityman Mason Evitts (.283 AVG, .394 OBP) is back to lead a Mahanoy Area line-up that only graduated two regulars. The Golden Bears also return their top two innings-eaters in senior Jason Richmond (49.2 IP, 64 H, 16 BB, 36 K) and Evitts (30 IP, 54 H, 34 BB, 24 K).

Class AAA

Back-to-back district champ Tamaqua Area returns a solid nucleus from a team that made a run to the state semifinals. The pitching staff is deep and experienced with Kosciolek (22.2 IP, 17 H, 9 BB, 22 K), who is slated to log more innings after being shelved by injury the first month of last season, plus senior RHP Bo Rottet (39 IP, 28 H, 9 BB, 48 K), senior RHP Connor Hartung (36.2 IP, 25 H, 14 BB, 32 K), and junior RHP Russell Blaker (26 IP, 25 H, 10 BB, 14 K) all back after logging significant innings. One of the few graduates off last year's squad was Matt Roberts, the team's leading hitter and top power guy, but coach Jeff Reading still has seven familiar names to write into his line-up, including 2nd-team all-Area first baseman Kosciolek (.322 AVG, .410 OBP, 13 BB vs 12 K, .522 SLG), Kutztown-bound all-Area Player of the Year Rottet (.446 AVG, .584 SLG, 9 SB), and junior catcher Owen Bates (.340 AVG, .426 OBP).

Despite the loss of its innings leader to graduation, district runner-up Blue Mountain is still in good shape on the mound, with a strike-throwing staff that's led by seniors Dean Stramara (37.2 IP, 39 H, 9 BB, 35 K) and Sean Greenawalt (36.1 IP, 25 H, 14 BB, 50 K). Senior Troy Moyer (14 IP, 13 H, 3 BB, 17 K) and junior John Werbacher (9 IP, 8 H, 3 BB, 10 K) were solid in limited opportunities last year and could soak up some of the available innings. 1st-team all-Area infielder Greenawalt (.403 AVG, .584 SLG) leads an Eagles line-up that is also largely intact, and should get contributions from Moyer (.343 AVG, .444 OBP) and senior infielder Adam Hull (.319 AVG, .377 OBP).

Saucon Valley returns experience in its line-up in the form of senior Colonial League 1st-team third baseman Anthony Sneska (.355 AVG) and Honorable Mention second baseman Joe Schuyler (.342 AVG, 24 SB), plus juniors Nate Harka (.290 AVG, 16 BB) and Honorable Mention outfielder Adam Hough (.345 AVG). Juniors Zach Thatcher and Ryan Sharkey, along with seniors Tyler Millets and Josh Hein, will be vying for mound work behind junior Honorable Mention LHP Brian Wildrick (35.1 IP, 39 K; right) on coach Phil Sams' staff.

Pottsville Area returns a number of key contributors from its Schuylkill League championship club. 1st-team all-Area infielder Blankenhorn (.359 AVG, 11 XBH), Nabholz, La Salle-bound catcher Connor Hinchliffe, senior second baseman Ty Painter, and all-Area Rookie of the Year Darion Jacoby (.321 AVG) will anchor coach Mike Welsh's offense. 1st-team all-Area Nabholz (46 IP, 62 K) and junior RHP J.J. Spehrley (right) will front the Crimson Tide rotation, which could also see a trio of sophomore RHPs -- Eric Wapinsky, Ryan Kalinich, and Gavin Hinchliffe -- log innings.

An experienced group that only lost two graduates is back for Northwestern Lehigh. The Tigers all-Colonial League Honorable Mention left side of the infield -- junior shortstop Jake Augustus (.380 AVG, 11 SB) and senior third baseman Josh Williamson (.333 AVG) -- will team with Arcadia-bound outfielder Nick Rodriguez (.300 AVG) and junior second baseman Brady Mengel (.338 AVG) to power the offense. Coach Len Smith will utilize the services of RHPs Williamson, Augustus, Muhlenberg-bound Brandon Eden, and senior Jordan Storm on the mound.

Two 1st-team all-Colonial League selections return for Wilson Area: Chestnut Hill-bound catcher Jon Cintron (.455 AVG) and Arcadia-bound outfielder Phil Pierfy (,419 AVG, .550 OBP, 14 XBH). Sophomore infielder Brandon Miller (.375 AVG; right) had a strong rookie season, setting the bar for freshman infielder Gabe Karslo and freshman C/1B Brandon Smith this spring. Pierfy, Cintron, Miller, and junior A.J. Raso form a quartet of RHPs at first-year coach Josh Hinkle's disposal.

A pair of juniors -- LHP Zachary Svetik (23 IP, 16 H, 11 BB, 27 K) and RHP Zachary Buck (29.1 IP, 17 H, 14 BB, 14 K) -- will front the pitching staff for Palmerton Area. Led by senior first baseman Nathan DeKorte (.278 AVG) and junior outfielder Jonathan Schwartz (.288 AVG, .350 OBP, 9 SB), coach Mike Svetik will be looking to coax more production out of a line-up that averaged less than three runs per game last season.

Class AAAA

The big news here is the formation of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, which resulted from a merger between the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference. The eighteen-team super-conference, the tournament for which will essentially be a preview of the district AAAA tournament (only Allentown Central Catholic is not in AAAA), is split into three divisions of six teams each: Mountain, Steel, and Skyline.

Parkland will once again have a bullseye on its back, as the LVC and district champ attempts to retool following the graduation of two-thirds of its line-up and two of its top pitchers. Higgins (38.1 IP, 21 H, 14 BB, 59 K) and Jacoby (27 IP, 30 H, 7 BB, 24 K) are expected to jump to the forefront of a rotation that will also feature 6-foot-3 senior RHP Evan McAndrew (7.1 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 K) in an expanded role, along with Rabasco (5.1 IP, 3 H, 4 BB, 9 K), whose innings have remained limited throughout his career due to the Trojans enviable mound depth and his role as the starting shortstop. Having more extra base hits than the rest of the offensive returners combined, 1st-team all-LVC infielder Rabasco (.468 AVG, .543 OBP, 11 BB vs 6 K, 15 XBH; right) is the engine that will power the line-up. Coach Tony Galucy will also turn to senior Honorable Mention outfielder Jeffrey Strisovsky (.328 AVG, .487 OBP, 19 BB vs 7 K) and Kutztown commit Justin Afflerbach (.277 AVG, .377 OBP) to lead an otherwise inexperienced offense that could get a jolt if the switch-hitting slugger Mueller can earn his way into the line-up.

Following a number of key losses to graduation, Emmaus will rely on its senior leadership to shepherd the remainder of its inexperienced roster. Arcadia-bound RHP/IF Joel Bartoni and Centenary-bound RHP/Util Trey Hinkle are slated for impact two-way duty for the Green Hornets. Senior RHP Teja Venigalla and senior outfielder Lukas Weider will also play large roles for rookie skipper Mike Mihalik.

In stark contrast to the past two seasons, Whitehall will feature an inexperienced roster this spring. Meyers (43 IP, 38 H, 13 BB, 42 K; right) and sophomore LHP Alex Brunejo (8.2 IP, 10 H, 3 BB, 10 K) will front coach Shaun O'Boyle's pitching staff. Speedy junior GIanni Sinatore (.278 AVG, .353 OBP, 7 SB) sparks the offense and anchors the outfield defense, while shortstop Meyers (.310 AVG, .390 OBP) and outfielder Brunejo (.275 AVG) will bolster a line-up that will rely on newcomers to compensate for production lost to graduation.

A Liberty squad that graduated eight of nine starters will turn to its pitching this year to keep it in the hunt. Junior RHPs Ben Hudock (right) and Alexis Calderon got valuable experience last year, while sophomore RHP Mike Perrault looks to carve out a role for himself. Moravian-bound 1st-team all-LVC outfielder Mike Mittl (.379 AVG) is the lone returning offensive piece. Coach Andy Pitsilos will hope that Hudock plus sophomore infielders Elias Gross and Sammy Kraihanzel can step up and replace some of the lost run production.

Armed with a low- to mid-90s fastball, Stroudsburg's Nikorak (47.2 IP, 20 H, 42 BB, 66 K) is one of the top pitching prospects in the entire country. Reports from the summer have him learning to harness his command. If he can carry that over to this spring, the Mountaineers will be even more dangerous than last year, as Kutztown-bound Jarrad Choy is a more-than-capable #2 starter. Nikorak, who also happened to earn 1st-team all-MVC honors as an outfielder, is part a solid returning line-up for coach Phil Stokes that also features senior 1st-team selections T.J. Backer (right) and Eric Pugliesi, plus slick-fielding Honorable Mention infielder C.J. Lopez.

Junior infielder John Yocum (.413 AVG, 10 XBH), the only underclassman to earn 1st-team all-LVC honors last year, leads a Freedom offense that graduated four regular starters. Two of four primary pitchers are back for the Patriots, including Yocum (23.2 IP, 24 H, 10 BB, 21 K) and senior Zak Gagnon (30.2 IP, 27 H, 24 BB, 24 K; right).

Pocono Mountain East welcomes back seven of nine starters, including a quartet of all-Mountain Valley Conference seniors: 2nd-team first baseman Bryan Ianni, 2nd-team shortstop Mike Ferrara, 2nd-team DH/Util Luke Hohenstein, and Honorable Mention second baseman Ryan Pena. RHP Ianni also doubles as the ace of coach Matt Loriniger's pitching staff.

Easton Area graduated 80% of its innings from last year and will likely turn to seniors Casey Brown (13.2 IP, 18 H, 5 BB, 17 K) and Ryan Bonfanti (12.2 IP, 13 H, 3 BB, 7 K) to assume larger roles. Junior infielder Bryan Reagle (.278 AVG, .451 OBP, 14 BB vs 5 K; right) and Misericordia-bound catcher Conor Smith anchor the middle of the field for what will be a revamped Red Rovers line-up.

East Stroudsburg Area South captured the tournament title in the final season of the MVC. After graduating his top two innings eaters, coach Kane Furst will turn to junior LHP Kyle Furst (30.2 IP, 18 H, 11 BB, 23 K) and sophomore RHP Jake Cirillo (22.1 IP, 16 H, 23 BB, 16 K) to move a couple rungs up the pitching ladder. The Cavaliers offense has five big holes to fill, but a strong junior class led by catcher Nick Boushell (.378 AVG, .451 OBP), second baseman Jake Kochmansky (.351 AVG, .414 OBP, 10 BB vs 9 K, 9 SB), and outfielder Furst (.354 AVG, .421 OBP, 9 BB vs 7 K, 8 SB) could help weather the storm while the new contributors get acclimated.

Coming off a season in which its line-up often featured four or five sophomores, Northampton Area hopes its junior-heavy roster can use that experience and take another step forward. Wilkes-bound LHP Noah Durnin (30.2 IP, 32 H, 15 BB, 22 K) will front a pitching staff that will also feature a trio of junior RHPs in Nick DeMieri (17.2 IP, 24 H, 9 BB, 11 K), Will Stackhouse (7 IP, 9 H, 3 BB, 4 K), and Justin Bragg throwing to junior catcher Ian Luberti (.419 OBP, 16 BB vs 10 K; right). Coach Mick Sugra's line-up remains largely intact, with Louisburg commit Harley Davidson (.368 OBP), along with juniors Jon Miller (.286 AVG, .367 OBP) and Stackhouse (.302 AVG, .380 OBP) anchoring the infield.

The early part of the season could be used to see how the line-up shakes out for Pleasant Valley, as virtually every spot on the field is up for grabs. Penn State Harrisburg-bound infielders Travis Van Houten and Nicholas Domenici, along with Thomas Aruta (right) will find a way to contribute, as should junior outfielders Matthew Pierce and Brendan Kearns. RHPs Van Houten and Aruta, plus LHPs Pierce and Domenici, form a balanced pitching staff for coach Charlie Inserra.

East Stroudsburg Area North returns a good chunk of its pitching staff, led by senior RHP Will Kazura (44.1 IP, 57 H, 21 BB, 33 K) and junior RHP Gabe Acosta (25.1 IP, 25 H, 19 BB, 23 K), along with a couple of sophomores who got their feet wet on varsity last year in RHP Tommy Dunleavy (4 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K) and LHP Drew Mead (11 IP, 6 H, 6 BB, 14 K). The offense is a different story, as five of the Timberwolves top bats graduated. Coach Matt Suarez will look to break in a new crew behind Acosta (.360 AVG, .450 OBP) and senior Gabe Gil (.275 AVG, .450 SLG).

Nazareth Area will be incorporating seven new starters this spring, including junior catcher Jake Trenberth and sophomore outfielder Nick Hinkle, with senior third baseman Justin Albert (.375 AVG, .459 OBP, 5 BB vs 4 K) and senior outfielder Austin Ortwein (.318 AVG) the only returners. Coach Bryan Wolf's pitching staff will have a new look as well, with senior RHP Brett Kline (35.1 IP, 52 H, 24 BB, 15 K) joined by a couple of sophomore RHPs in Hinkle and Noah McMullen.

Senior 1st-team LVC infielder Justin Kratz (.339 AVG, .453 OBP, 12 BB vs 9 K, 16 SB; right) and senior outfielder Misael Sanchez (.295 AVG, .404 OBP) are back to lead a William Allen otherwise depleted by graduation. Senior infielder Michael Cesar (.390 AVG, .554 OBP, 13 BB vs 6 K, .682 SLG, 10 SB), a transfer from nearby Lincoln Leadership Academy, and junior catcher Ivan Solis are expected to step in and contribute for the Canaries.
