By Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

The 1st Session of the Preseason College Prospects Showcases took place Saturday, January 10th at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA with Session Two scheduled for January 17. Over the next three days we will take a look at all prospects in attendance. Today we begin by analyzing the position players in attendance.

Top Prospect

James GaborJames Gabor
, OF, William Penn Charter, Class of 2017

Gabor turned in an impressive 6.63 60-yard dash and showed some of the same fast twitch tendencies in his left-handed swing during an impressive round of batting practice. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound William Penn Charter sophomore is far from physical maturity and should develop some lift and power potential to his swing as his frame fills out. Currently ranked No. 57 in the PA Class of 2017, Gabor displays extremely quick hands from a slightly open stance and the ability to stay behind the baseball through contact. The lefty barreled the baseball to all fields and showed good balance with minimal stride action.

position players (in alphabetical order)

Brian Casper
, 3B, Moon Area HS (PA), Class of 2016

Casper is a solidly built 5-foot-11, 185-pound third baseman that moves well (7.32 60-yard dash). The right-handed hitter starts from a very narrow stance and creates barrel whip almost entirely from the upper half of his frame with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Casper stays inside the baseball very well and displayed the ability to drive the baseball middle/opposite with authority. He showcased capable actions defensively with an accurate 80 mph arm across the diamond.

Ben DeMarco, SS/2B, Manheim Township HS (PA), Class of 2019
DeMarco displayed a loose arm and sound defensive fundamentals with a 73 mph arm across the diamond. The 5-foot-7, 125-pound 8th grader ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and registered a 72 mph bat exit velocity. DeMarco hits from a slightly open right-handed stance and uses a toe tap stride for rhythm. He squared the baseball frequently during a solid round of batting practice displaying a flat barrel path and the ability to use all fields.

Austin Denlinger, 2B/OF, Elizabethtown HS (PA), Class of 2018
Denlinger hits from a slightly open stance with a leg lift stride that produces barrel whip. The 5-foot-7, 135-pound right-handed hitter barreled the baseball frequently during his round of batting practice and displayed the ability to use all fields with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Denlinger showcased developing arm strength (63 mph) and solid fielding mechanics. As he matures physically and works to get through the baseball his arm strength is likely to improve dramatically. The sophomore ran a 7.43 60-yard dash.

Brenden Moshos, C/3B, Manheim Township HS (PA), Class of 2019
Moshos packs a big punch in his 5-foot-2, 120-pound frame. The 8th grader shows solid swing mechanics from both sides of the plate with a leg lift load from the right side that leads to solid barrel whip. Moshos shows good balance and rhythm to his swing from both sides, utilizing a toe tap stride from the left side to initiate his hands. He flashed well above average catch and throw skills from behind the dish with pop times of 2.19-2.25. As he develops physically, Moshos will be a catcher to follow closely in this class.

Drew Mummau, SS/RHP, Manheim Central HS (PA), Class of 2019
Mummau impressed with an all-around skill set that will make him a prospect to watch in this class. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitter hits from a square, wide base and exhibited good balance throughout his swing. Mummau gets to extension routinely and squared the baseball to all fields with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. The 8th grader showed fluid actions defensively and the ability to play through the baseball with an accurate 71 mph arm across the diamond. Mummau completed a solid performance by running a 7.14 60-yard dash.

Ben Reed, 2B/SS, Central York HS (PA), Class of 2017
Reed is a 5-foot-10, 130-pound middle infielder that ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. The sophomore showed capable defensive actions with developing arm strength (64 mph). Reed hits from a square stance and utilizes a lift and replace stride to create a bat exit velocity of 64 mph. The right-handed hitter has some length to his swing but displayed the ability to routinely square the baseball. As he becomes stronger and works to shorten his swing path he should better handle balls on the inner half.

Bryce Ruth, 1B/3B, R/R, Big Spring HS (PA), Class of 2016
Ruth is a right-handed hitter with a projectable 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame. The junior starts from a wide base with a slight crouch out of a square stance. He imparts a heel lift stride and flashes some power potential when he gets to extension with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Ruth showcased solid feet (7.50 60-yard dash) and capable actions around the bag at first base with an accurate 74 mph arm across the diamond.
