Conference Preview: District 6 Class AAA

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

           district 6 - class aaa

Preseason Favorite

Hollidaysburg (15-6)

The Golden Tigers did not reach their ultimate goal of reaching the state tournament following a loss in the district final last year. While they were hit with significant losses to graduation, the Tigers return enough fire power to get back to and potentially win this year's District 6 crown.

Preseason Player of the Year

Andy CrumAndy Crum, Hollidaysburg HS (Class of 2014)

Crum is a 6-foot, 170-pound 1B/LHP that went 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA in 2013. He will take over as the No. 1 starter as a senior. The Shippensburg University recruit will also be counted on for offense following a .291 average with 14 RBI as a junior. Crum is ranked No. 153 in the PA Class of 2014.

Top Prospects

Bellefonte

The Red Raiders went 8-10 last year and return several key contributors on offense. Senior shortstop Doylan Deitrich hit .386 last year and was among the team leaders in doubles with five. Juniors Tanner Day (.355, 17 runs) and Taylor Butts (.311) will also provide some offensive punch. Junior RHP Phil Fenstermacker showed signs of being a No. 1 starter as a sophomore. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound righty went 3-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 25.1 innings of work.

Greater Johnstown

The Trojans went 6-11 in 2013. Unsigned Senior C/RHP Grant Noon highlights the 2014 roster. Noon led the Trojans in hitting as a junior and also sits in the low 80s off the mound. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter put up impressive numbers in 2013. He hit .560 with 12 doubles, two triples and 36 RBI. Noon went 5-3 on the mound with a 1.19 ERA.

Hollidaysburg

The Golden Tigers suffered a heart breaking 1-0 loss to Somerset in the district title game in 2013. Four every day starters graduated, but Hollidaysburg returns enough to make them the favorite reach the district finals again.

In addition to the District 6 Preseason Player of the Year, Andy Crum, senior Trent Sipes (.361, 18 runs) and junior Jordan McCall (.296, 10 RBI) will also be counted on heavily for their offense. McCall will likely fill the No. 2 role on the pitching staff following a 3-1 record in 18 innings of work as a sophomore. Sipes is a slick fielding middle infielder that will solidify the middle of the Tigers' diamond defensively.

huntingdon

Huntingdon suffered a 1-0 loss to Somerset in the District 6 semifinals in 2013. The Bearcats graduated just four seniors from last year's team that finished 9-11. Senior OF Tanner Cook (Pitt-Johnstown recruit) returns with a career .350 average and the ability to go get the baseball in center field.
