Corner Infielders Analysis: Week 1 of Fall College Prospect Program

The 1st weekend of the Fall College Prospect Program was highlighted by two Ohio prospects rising to the top and a Class of 2017 prospect that shows a very bright future. Following is a breakdown of the prospects that participated at 1B and 3B during the first weekend of action at La Roche College (8/17) and at Seton Hill University (8/18).

Top performers

Vilk1. 1B/3B Sam Vilk, Mentor HS (OH), Class of 2014

Vilk is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound left-handed hitter that showed legitimate power potential in a very solid round of batting practice. Vilk created a 92 mph bat exit velocity with an explosive lower half and a short path to the baseball. He gets to extension on a regular basis and barreled the baseball repeatedly to the gaps and pull side. Vilk went 1-for-2 in game play with a double and showcased an 84 mph arm across the diamond in defensive evaluations.

3B/1B Stuart Schley, Orrville HS (OH), Class of 2014

Schley is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect that is comfortable at both 3B and 1B. He showcased good feet and a solid 80 mph arm across the diamond from 3B. The switch-hitter utilizes a wide stance from both sides of the plate and displayed the ability to barrel the baseball routinely with some gap power. Schley showcased nearly identical bat exit velocities of 86 mph (RH) and 88 mph (LH) and went 1-for-3 with a double in game action.

3B Christian Fedko, Vincentian Academy, Class of 2017

Fedko served notice that he will be among the ranked players in this class when the first round of rankings are released in June of 2014. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitter uses a leg lift trigger and an explosive lower half to create barrel whip. Fedko showcased a bat exit velocity of 79 mph and went 3-for-6 in game action on the weekend. He will need to continue to develop arm strength and work on his footwork to elevate himself into an elite prospect in this class, but showed the raw tools necessary to become a highly recruited player.
 

Best of the rest

1B Zach Craven, McKeesport HS, Class of 2014

Craven went 1-for-3 with a double in game action, getting robbed of a 2nd hit on a diving catch in center field. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound uncommitted senior showed solid actions at 1B and an 81 mph bat exit velocity at the plate.

1B Eric Fairman, Thomas Jefferson HS, Class of 2014

Fairman showcased an 83 mph bat exit velocity and good extension to his swing out of a high hands load. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitter showcased some power potential in batting practice and went on to go 1-for-3 with a home run in game action. Fairman showed soft hands around the 1B bag and a 62 mph arm across the diamond.

3B/2B Garett Goslaw, Butler Area HS, Class of 2015

Goslaw utilized a slightly open stance and a flat bat path to barrel the baseball consistently in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. He went 1-for-6 in game action with a triple. Goslaw showed athletic actions defensively with a clean transition and a 70 mph arm across the diamond.

1B/3B Seth Holler, Greater Latrobe HS, Class of 2015

Holler has a projectable corner infielder's frame at 6-foot-2, 205-pounds. The right-handed hitter showcased a leg lift trigger and a bat exit velocity of 85 mph during a round of batting practice that saw him barrel most baseballs. Holler displayed a 70 mph arm across the diamond and a soft glove hand.

3B Adam Serpa, North Hills HS, Class of 2014

Serpa is a solidly built 6-foot, 180-pound prospect that showcased a bat exit velocity of 74 mph. He went 1-for-3 with a walk in game action and displayed a throwing arm of 67 mph across the diamond.

1B Matt Thompson, Saegertown HS, Class of 2014

Thompson showed soft hands and good agility around the bag at 1B. The 6-foot, 165-pound left-handed hitter utilized a flat bat path to square the baseball to all fields in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 85 mph. Thompson went 1-for-3 in game action, barreling the baseball all three trips to the plate.

1B Caleb Thorn, Knoch HS, Class of 2014

Thorn showed the ability to barrel the baseball consistently in batting practice with a flat bat path through the hitting zone and a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter displayed the ability to make all plays at 1B and a 73 mph arm across the diamond.
