Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2015

OF/RHP Chris Butera entered the Eastern PA College Prospect Program ranked No. 29 in PA and No. 197 in the PBR combined rankings. Joining him at the end of the day as a prospect to watch in the Class of 2015 was SS/2B Ryne Ogren. Following is a look at the 15 juniors that participated on January 20 at The Phelps School in Malvern, PA.


Top prospects

Chris ButeraOF/RHP Chris Butera (Malvern Prep HS)

Butera is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way prospect that only worked out as an outfielder. He showcased athletic actions in the outfield and an 85 mph arm with above average carry to home plate. Butera ran a 7.06 60-yard dash on a very slow track, but has run 6.75 several times in the past year. The right-handed hitter utilized an open stance with a lift and replace stride foot to make consistent hard contact during his round of batting practice. Butera stays inside the baseball well and showed a bat exit velocity of 75 mph. The junior went 8-1 on the hill last season, but only worked out as an outfielder at this event.

Ryne OgrenSS/2B Ryne Ogren (Conestoga HS)

Ogren flashed fluid actions and the ability to play the baseball on the move with an 82 mph arm across the infield from his shortstop position. He displayed a clean transition and quick feet with the ability to cover plenty of ground. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior ran a 7.22 60-yard dash and showcased a 75 mph bat exit velocity off the tee. Ogren uses a high hands load out of a square stance and stays inside the baseball well with a direct bat path. The right-handed hitter barreled the baseball routinely and showed good balance throughout his swing.

RHP/2B Jeffrey Allen (Mechanicsburg HS)

Allen ran a 7.74 60-yard dash and showcased a short swing path with a bat exit velocity of 81 mph. The right-handed hitter barreled the baseball routinely out of a slightly open stance and showed good rhythm in his swing. Allen displayed a soft glove hand and the ability to play through the baseball with throws of 72 mph across the diamond. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior sat 77-79 from a high 3/4 arm slot on the mound. His 70 mph 11/5 breaking curveball showed tight rotation and Allen commanded a 71 mph changeup at fastball arm speed.

OF RJ Boop (Neshaminy HS)

Boop is a 6-foot, 165-pound prospect that showed athletic actions a straight line carry on throws of 78 mph from the outfield. The junior ran a 7.29 60-yard dash on a slow track and showcased a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. The right-handed hitter displayed a line drive approach out of a slightly open stance. Boop barreled the baseball routinely but will need to work to add further extension to his swing through contact.

2B/OF TJ Czerwinski (Freedom HS)

Czerwinski ran a 7.56 60-yard dash and showcased a 72 mph bat exit velocity from the right side of the plate. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound junior has a line drive approach with very little lower half action in his swing. He showed the ability to use all fields while barreling the baseball regularly in his round of batting practice. Czerwinski displayed a 71 mph arm across the diamond from his middle infield position.

C Alex Del Giudice (Upper Merion Area HS)

Del Giudice showcased pop times of 2.29-2.34 on throws of 66 mph from the crouch. The junior showed good footwork and a clean transition with a accurate arm. The 5-11, 165-pound backstop ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and showcased a 73 mph bat exit velocity. Del Giudice hits from a slightly closed stance and strides further closed often causing his hips to not to get cleared. The right-handed hitter utilizes a high hands load and demonstrated the ability to square the baseball frequently in his round of batting practice.

RHP/SS Andrew Del Giudice (Upper Merion Area HS)

Del Giudice sat 75-76 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a long arm throwing motion. His 68 mph 11/5 breaking ball showed slurve action while his 68 mph split changeup had some late down action. The 5-foot-8, 140-pound junior ran a 7.57 60-yard dash and showcased a 70 mph across the diamond from his middle infield position. Del Giudice hits from a slightly open stance with a high hands load. He demonstrated a line drive approach and barreled the baseball frequently with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph.

OF Eric Duran (Pine Richland HS)

Duran ran a 7.41 60-yard dash displayed an accurate 76 mph throwing arm from the outfield. The 6-foot, 185-pound junior has a very athletic frame and could increase his arm strength by lengthening his throwing motion. Duran showcased an 83 mph bat exit velocity and took one of the top rounds of batting practice at the event. The right-handed hitter hits from a square stance with a very quiet, balanced approach. He barreled the baseball routinely and the baseball jumped off his bat head.

SS/2B Zach Fedele (Allentown Central Catholic HS)

Fedele has an athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with room to fill out yet. The right-handed hitter showcased the ability to square the baseball regularly in his round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 68 mph. Fedele hits from a slightly open stance and stays inside the baseball well. The middle infielder ran a 7.31 60-yard dash and displayed a 70 mph arm across the infield.

LHP Joseph Fulton (Kennett Square HS)

Fulton is a 5-foot-10, 140-pound lefty that sat 71-73 from a high 3/4 arm slot. The junior also displayed a two-seam fastball that topped at 73 mph and a cutter at 71 mph. Fulton commanded his 65 mph curveball with 1/7 break at 65 mph and showcased a 65 mph changeup at 65 mph. The lefty showed repeatable mechanics and command of the strike zone throughout his bullpen session. As he continues to mature physically Fulton is likely to see some added velocity and will need to work to gain separation in velocity among his five pitches.

1B/C Ryan Horvath (Parkland HS) 

Horvath is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right-handed hitter that displayed some bat speed from a square stance with a lift-and-replace stride foot. The junior barreled the baseball often in his round of batting practice and showed some gap power potential with an 83 mph bat exit velocity. Horvath showed a soft glove hand and capable footwork around the bag at 1B with throws of 73 mph across the diamond.

2B/SS Matt Kerber (Tulpehocken HS)

Kerber is a 6-foot, 160-pound prospect that showcased a 74 mph bat exit velocity from the right side of the plate. The junior displayed a slightly open stance and utilized a short swing path to barrel the baseball frequently during his round of batting practice. Kerber ran a solid 7.24 60-yard dash on a slow track and showed a 69 mph arm across the diamond from his middle infield position.

C Austin Morgan (Episcopal Academy)

Morgan showcased pop times of 2.15-2.22 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound backstop displayed a clean transition and a very accurate arm. His pop times will continue to drop as he works to shorten his throwing motion. Morgan ran a 7.56 60-yard dash and showed a 73 mph bat exit velocity from the tee. The right-handed hitter utilizes a high hands load from a slightly open stance. He has some length to his swing, but was able to barrel the baseball frequently in his round of batting practice.

2B/SS Nick Perilli (Berks Catholic HS)

Perilli ran a 7.71 60-yard dash and flashed solid defensive actions with a 73 mph arm across the diamond. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior will need to continue to develop further arm strength, but showed a soft glove hand and the ability to make all plays. The right-handed hitter barreled the baseball consistently with a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Perilli showcased a strong lower half and some gap power potential to the pull side.

LHP Ian Roth (Wilson HS)

Roth is a 5-foot-6, 165-pound lefty with a solid build that sat 68-70 from a high 3/4 arm slot. The junior also displayed a 66 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed with some arm side run and a 70 mph two-seam fastball. Roth's best pitch is a hard biting 66 mph curveball with very late breaking action. He showed the ability to throw the pitch consistently for strikes down in the zone. With some minor adjustments to his mechanics Roth could see some additional velocity.
