Game Recap: Hanover Area at Penn Charter

Penn Charter 3, Hanover Area 2

Don't let the final score fool you, as there were a lot of loud outs recorded in this one. But with the line-drives finding gloves and both pitching staffs pounding the strike zone, a three-run third inning was all the Quakers needed to pull off the victory.

Hanover Area Scouting Notes

The Hawkeyes played the game as a scrimmage (and, therefore, without numbered jerseys), so it was a bit tough to keep track of individual players, but here's what we think we managed to keep straight:

  • Catcher Mike Sulcoski (East Stroudsburg) had three quality at-bats, with a six-hole single and two barreled balls that turned into outs. Starting pitcher Mike Blazaskie (Misericordia) kept his team in the game with his arm (4 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K) and his bat (2-3, 2 doubles).
  • 2015 SS Christian Pack showed solid skills across the board. He jumped on the first pitch of the game for a line-out to left, picked up an opposite field single his second at-bat, then ran a 4.53 home-to-1B his third trip to the plate. He also made a nice play on a high pop in shallow center field.
  • 2014 RHP Mike Bugonowicz pitched well in relief (2 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K), effectively mixing his fastball and breaking ball from a low-3/4 slot.

Penn Charter Scouting Notes

  • Smith2015 RHP/OF Gabe Smith (right) started on the bump and had a solid debut (4 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K). His velo appeared a tick down from the 82-84 he showed at the Preseason All-State Showcase in February, and his FB didn't have quite the same action. However, Smith featured a great equalizer in his CB, for which he showed a terrific feel and used liberally throughout the outing, both to grab strikes early in the count and to finish hitters off. He occasionally mixed in a solid CH as well.
  • Left-handed hitting 2015 1B Dillon Malandro featured a nice, loose swing and got good extension through contact in the clean-up spot.
  • 2017 OF Adam Holland also took a couple of quality swings and made a nice running grab on a fly ball hit toward the right-field corner.
  • Bergmann2016 C/OF Kenny Bergmann (right) showed off his powerful stroke on a deep F8 in the first inning. He will represent Team PA at the PBR Future Games over the summer.
  • Outside of Blazaskie, 2014 SS Steven Cohen (Lafayette) had the most consistent day at the plate, lining out to right, driving a 2-RBI double over the right-fielder's head, and just missing one on a sky-high P6.
  • Out of the bullpen, 2016 RHP Kyle Konowal (2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) did a quality job throwing strikes and 2014 RHP Brian Luxton (1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K) used his funk and CB to wriggle out of a bases loaded jam for the save.
