Game of the Day: South Park at Laurel Highlands

Laurel Highlands junior Zach Uhazie made a fourth inning run stand up for a 1-0 win over South Park in WPIAL Section 4 class AAA action. The victory kept the Mustangs a game and a half behind section-leading West Mifflin, effectively turning the battle for the section into a two-horse race (the other six teams are at least two losses behind Laurel Highlands).

Dominic PeroniSophomore Kyle Thompson (6 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 K) did his part to keep the Eagles in the ballgame, ceding only a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior infielder Dominic Peroni (right) led off that frame with a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the left fielder. After a groundout and a strikeout, Peroni stood at third base with two outs for junior Rich Pish, who doubled to bring home the only run of the ballgame.

South Park wasn't without chances of its own, as the Eagles had at least one runner on base in every inning. Their best chance came in the top of the fifth when a walk, single, and foul fly left runners on the corners with two outs, but Uhazie (CG, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K) was able to record a big strikeout to quell the threat. Following a two-out double, the Eagles had one final chance in the seventh inning, but Uhazie polished off the game with a comebacker to the mound.

Don't be fooled by Laurel Highlands' 6-6 overall record. After starting the season with four straight losses on a season-opening trip to South Carolina, the Mustangs have won six of eight since returning to the Commonwealth, with both losses by one-run margins. The pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in six straight games.
