Outfielders Analysis: Week 2 of Fall College Prospect Program

The 2nd weekend of the Fall College Prospect Program showcased a number of strong performances by prospects in the outfield. Following is a breakdown of the outfielders that participated at Temple University (8/24) and at Widener University (8/25). 

Top Performers

Remy Costa1. OF Remy Costa, East Stroudsburg North HS, Class of 2014

Costa impressed with solid routes to the baseball, the ability to go get the baseball and an 82 mph arm from his outfield position. The 5-foot-5, 140-pound right handed hitter utilized a square stance and no stride in barreling the baseball repeatedly to all fields during a very solid round of batting practice. Costa showcased a bat exit velocity of 80 mph and a line drive stroke that is ideal for a top of the order hitter. Costa went 2-for-3 in game action at Widener University, turning a single into a double with aggressive base running. The uncommitted senior will be a solid contributor at the next level and should garner increased attention following his performance.

2. 1B/OF Kevin Barron, Hatboro-Horsham HS, Class of 2015

While Barron's primary position is 1B, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect showed that he is more than capable of playing a corner outfield position at the next level. Barron showcased athletic actions and an 85 mph arm from the outfield. The right-handed hitter showcased power potential out of a slightly open stance with solid extension to his swing during batting practice. Barron uses an explosive lower half to create barrel whip and a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. He went 2-for-8 at the plate in game action, including a two-run home run at Temple University.

3. OF Brian Verratti, Neumann-Goretti HS, Class of 2016

Verratti showed athleticism and developing arm strength in the outfield with throws of 80 mph. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitter showcased a compact swing out of a square stance and the ability to barrel the baseball consistently in batting practice. Verratti utilized a lift and replace stride foot and quick hands to create a bat exit velocity of 79 mph. He went 0-for-6 with a walk in game action, but squared the baseball for outs in several at bats.

Best of the Rest

OF Patrick Clement, York Catholic HS, Class of 2014

Clement showed well in all facets of the game over the course of two day. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound left-handed hitter utilized a square stance, with a lift and replace stride foot to produce a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. He showed the ability to barrel the baseball consistently and went 2-for-6 in game action, with two triples. Clement showcased an accurate throwing arm from the outfield with some straight line carry on throws of 77 mph.

OF Dan Gonella, Point Pleasant Borough HS (NJ), Class of 2014

Gonella is a right-handed hitter that showcased a square stance and a compact swing with solid lower half action. His flat bat path allowed Gonella to barrel the baseball repeatedly in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound prospect went 2-for-8 in game action with a double. Gonella showed athletic actions in the outfield with a 74 mph arm.

LHP/OF Zach Guth, Franklin HS, Class of 2015

Guth showcased the strongest outfield arm at the event with throws of 86 mph. The left-handed hitter utilized a high hands load and a leg lift stride leg to produce a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. He displayed the ability to barrel the baseball frequently and used all fields in his round of batting practice. Guth went 1-for-6 with a walk in game action over the course of the two days.

2B/OF Brayden Lackey, Cedar Cliff HS, Class of 2015

Lackey is a 5-foot-9, 155-pound prospect that showcased the ability to play through the baseball in the outfield with a quick release and a 76 mph throwing arm. The left-handed hitter uses a lift and replace stride foot and a solid hip turn to produce a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. He went 1-for-7 in game action, squaring several baseballs for outs.

OF John McGagh, Friends School of Baltimore (MD), Class of 2015

McGagh is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter that hits from a square stance with no stride. He showcased the ability to use all fields with a bat exit velocity of 75 mph. McGagh showed the ability to play through the baseball in the outfield with accurate throws of 70 mph.
