Pennsylvania College Teams Get Started

While baseball is unlikely to be played any time soon in the commonwealth two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) baseball programs got their seasons started this past weekend with trips to warmer weather states.

Pitt-Johnstown, one of two new additions to the PSAC along with Seton Hill, lost three games at #16 UNC Pembroke last weekend. The Mountain Cats will make trips to West Virginia the next two weekends for five games against former WVIAC opponents Shepherd and Concord prior to attempting to begin the Pennsylvania portion of their schedule on February 28.

UPJ freshman infielder Dillon Boyer (Connemaugh Township) got his collegiate career off to a solid start going 3-for-8 in two starts on the trip to North Carolina.

Millersville was also in action last weekend. The defending PSAC East champions returned to the sight of the 2013 NCAA Atlantic Regionals for a three game set with Winston-Salem State. The two clubs were the top seeds in the regional tournament a year ago with the event being hosted by the No. 2 seed Rams. The Marauders suffered a 4-1 loss in game one of the series, but bounced back to take the final two games and the series by scores of 7-4 and 6-4. Millersville, ranked No. 14 by College Baseball Lineup heading into the season, will return to North Carolina this weekend for a four game series at Chowan University.

Marauders' Freshman right-handed pitcher Brandon Miller (Ephrata) had an impressive start to his college career. The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder came on in relief in the sixth inning of game three and blanked the Rams over the next four innings. Miller, ranked No. 30 in the final PA Class of 2013 rankings, allowed just one hit, one walk and fanned five while picking up the win.

Many of the remaining programs in the PSAC will begin play this weekend along with Division I programs around the state. Following is a look at some of the early season match-ups on tap for this weekend.
