PA Top Prospect Games: Corner Infielders

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The 2015 PBR Pennsylvania Top Prospect Games took place on June 16-17 at Hank DeVincent Field on the campus of La Salle University. 88 prospects from around the state showcased their abilities in front of nearly 40 college coaches in attendance. Today we roll out the final installment of player evaluations from the event, with corner infielders taking center stage.

Third Basemen

Connor Bair, 2016, 3B, Manheim Township

5-foot-9, 175-pound, right-handed hitter. Hit from an open stance with controlled leg kick in BP that became more of a toe-tap in game action. Body stayed fairly still during swing and he took a pretty direct path to the ball, while he would benefit from additional strength. Posted an in-game 4.84 home-to-1B time. Showcased 78-mph exit velocity and 72-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 78 in game). Defensive actions weren’t always smooth, but all he did was make plays, showing some lateral movement to both sides with a quick release on DP feeds.

Mason Hambright, 2017, 3B, East Juniata
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Started from open stance, took waist-high leg kick and strode to square with ferris wheel hand load (circle down then back up) and some loop in swing path. Posted an average in-game home-to-1B time of 4.44. Showcased 83-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 83 in game). Has solid infield actions, although would benefit from rounding off his footwork in order to not have to change direction with his feet after fielding the ball.

Gavin Hinchliffe, 2017, 3B, Pottsville Area
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Kept body fairly still with a little bit of top half dive toward home plate. Showed some feel for the barrel in BP and the ball came off his bat well. Posted average in-game home-to-1B time of 4.44. Showcased 92-mph exit velocity and 82-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 88 in game). Solid feet to ground balls, fielded ball deep, could shore up some accuracy issues by ironing out variations in arm path and slot.

Bayley Jamanis, 2016, 3B, Lancaster Catholic
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and strode to square. Simple approach, eyes stayed level. Swing has some length and front hip leaves early at times. Showcased 85-mph exit velocity during workout (arm strength was down considerably due to recent arm ailment). Very solid defender. Good feet and hands, gains ground on throws, completes slow roller well.

Nick Lehman, 2016, 3B, Garden Spot
5-foot-11, 205-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and took a minimal stride to square. Has strength in frame and maintained posture during swing, which has some length to it. Showcased 83-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 82 in game). Doesn’t have the fastest feet and fielded the ball deep, but made some really nice in-game plays on the move and showed a very accurate throwing arm.

Nick Sacoman, 2016, 3B, Northern York
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and took a horizontal stride on his toe toward home plate. Slight barrel wrap created some length, but he repeated his smooth stroke, his hands worked, and he worked hard to keep his hands inside the baseball. Did not record any in-game straight through the bag home-to-1B times, but did post a 4.66 on a turn. Showcased 79-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Defensively, he got his feet set well before fielding the ball, while tending to field the ball deep with occasional dead feet that he had to start up again after the catch.

Dante’ Vaniel, 2016, 3B, McKeesport
6-foot-, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and took a big stride to a wide base. Swing has some length, but he showed some pullside pop in BP that he could tap into even more if he were to more fully incorporate his backside into his swing. Posted in-game best home-to-1B time of 4.84. Showcased 83-mph exit velocity and 77-mph arm strength during workout. Defensively, he set up well behind the baseball and gained ground on his throws with a long, over-the-top release.

Charlie Varriano, 2017, 3B, Hempfield Area
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from slightly closed stance with short stride and high back elbow. Balanced swing with good bat speed, hands work and head stays very still. Posted an in-game 4.47 home-to-1B time. Showcased 90-mph exit velocity and 82-mph arm strength during workout. Moved well defensively, showing a soft glovehand and good range to the line.

Justin Wright, 2018, 3B, Hempfield Area
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and took a near-waist-high leg kick to square. Short, easy stroke, hands worked, stayed balanced in BP and carried that over into game action. Really intriguing offensive upside. Posted a 4.58 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 89-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm (a few ticks down from previously seen). Defensively, he exhibited solid actions with good feet and played below the baseball very well.

First Basemen

Billy Brittingham, 2016, 1B, Germantown Academy

6-foot, 210-pound left-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and took a knee-to-knee stride to square. Easy swing with good raw pop, appears to be making more concerted effort to stay through the ball and use the whole field. Showcased 87-mph exit velocity (has been 90+ in the past) and 76-mph arm strength during workout. Appears to lose focus at times defensively (Billy really likes to hit), but has the actions and glovehand to be an adequate defender.

Ryan Dorneo, 2018, 1B, Saint Peter’s Prep (NJ)
5-foot-9, 180-pound left-handed hitter. Hit from square stance, incorporating a long knee-to-knee stride. Exhibited some bat speed with some length in his swing, while staying inside the ball well. Advanced physicality for his age. Posted an in-game 4.88 home-to-1B time. Showcased 84-mph exit velocity during workout. Did not participate in defensive workout, but played well with the leather during game action.

Dillon Good, 2016, 1B, Ephrata
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and toe-tapped to a wide base. Has strength in frame and smoked multiple balls into the left-center gap. Showcased 95-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 84 in game). Exhibited solid feet and moved well defensively, especially for his size.

Joe LaFiora, 2018, 1B, Neumann-Goretti
5-foot-9, 200-pound left-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance with high back elbow and took a controlled, knee-to-knee stride to square. Fairly easy, balanced swing and the ball came off his bat well. Showcased 81-mph exit velocity and 75-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 79 in game). Exhibited solid skillset across the board defensively.

Dillon Marsh, 2018, 1B, Lancaster Catholic
6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed hitter. Relaxed set-up, loose, easy swing with power potential. Front hip leaves early at times. Posted an in-game 4.35 home-to-1B time. Showcased 90-mph exit velocity and 81-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 85 in game). Exhibited good feet and soft glovehand with solid defensive actions.

Jon Pence, 2017, 1B, Blackhawk
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitter who is a solid prospect as a primary pitcher. Started from a square stance and strode slightly open. Kept head still and flashed some bat speed in BP, while a barrel wrap created some length. Showcased an 84-mph exit velocity and 80-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 84 in game). Exhibited solid glove defensively.

Travis Perry, 2018, 1B, Rocky Grove
6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed hitter who is a solid prospect as a primary pitcher. Hit from a square stance with minimal stride. Swing had some length with barrel whip, while he kept his body and head still throughout. Showcased a 92-mph exit velocity and 74-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 81 in game). Showed solid actions while fielding the ball deep.

Alex Rogers, 2016, 1B, Octorara Area
5-foot-8, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from square stance, incorporating heel raise stride while rolling front knee in. Armbar with low hands to launch. Would benefit from incorporating lower half into swing more. Showcased 80-mph exit velocity and 72-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid feet and hands defensively, worked hard to square up groundballs.

Tommy Savastio, 2017, 1B, Cedar Cliff
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and strode to square, landing on his toe and rolling his front knee in. Frame has some strength, while swing has some length and top half dive. Showcased 88-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid defensive skillset.

Shane Souchuck, 2017, 1B, Conwell-Egan Catholic
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance and strode to a wide base. Flashed some bat speed and opposite field pop, while coming out of the zone early at times. Showcased 84-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 81 in game). Would benefit from improved footwork and agility defensively.

Jake Trautman, 2017, 1B, Pittsburgh Central Catholic
6-foot-4, 220-pound left-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly closed stance with knee-to-knee stride. Hands worked with fairly simple, easy stroke and has legitimate power potential. Battled well left vs left. Showcased 93-mph exit velocity and 70-mph arm strength. Doesn’t have the quickest feet defensively, but exhibited a solid glovehand.
