PA Underclass Games Analysis: Corner Infielders

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The 2015 PBR Pennsylvania Underclass Games took place on June 23-24, with 51 prospects from around the state gathering at Tambur Field on the campus of Misericordia University. We begin our rundown of the participants today with the nine corner infielders in attendance.

Third Basemen

Kyler Fedko, 2017, 3B/RHP, Vincentian Academy
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly open stance with controlled knee-to-knee stride and kept eyes level. Flashed some bat speed in a loose, pull-oriented swing that he showed an ability to repeat. Did not run the 60-yard dash, but was an aggressive baserunner prior to suffering a lower leg injury on day one of the event. Showcased 78-mph exit velocity and 75-mph arm strength (ran FB up to 79 in game) during workout. Would like to see him play lower to the ground (currently carries glove high on approach), but he exhibited good feet and hands defensively.

Cade Flanley, 2017, 3B, Holy Redeemer
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance, strode to square and wide. Weight comes forward with stride, inhibiting ability to fully incorporate lower half into pull-oriented swing. Ran a 7.23 60-yard-dash and posted a 4.65 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 70-mph exit velocity and 79-mph arm strength during workout. Would like to see him work below the baseball defensively (especially on the backhand side) and be more consistent getting his feet to a balanced fielding position. Did a good job getting his feet working toward his target on throws.

Dante’ Vaniel, 2016, 3B/RHP, McKeesport
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a square stance and strode slightly closed. Short load and body stayed still during swing that had some length due to barrel wrap. Ran a 7.85 60-yard-dash and 4.85 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 79-mph exit velocity (was 83-mph the previous week) and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited good hands defensively. Would benefit from shortening his release time (currently shuffle-shuffle with long arm swing and over-the-top slot) on throws.

First Basemen

Dillon Good, 2016, RHP/1B, Ephrata
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and strode to slightly open. Logged six hits in seven at-bats, showing pullside power with a home run and two doubles. Swing was balanced and fairly short for someone with his power potential. Showcased a 90-mph exit velocity and did not participate in defensive workout, but acquitted himself well defensively and posted a 95-mph exit velocity the previous week.

Adam Jeannette, 2017, RHP/1B, Riverside
6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from square stance with weight on backside. Limited backside rotation inhibits weight transfer and leads to shouldery swing with bat coming out of zone early. Ran a 7.81 60-yard-dash and 4.81 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 81-mph exit velocity and 79-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid feet and glove defensively; would like to see him field the ball further out front.

Ryan Kutz, 2019, 1B/RHP, Lower Dauphin
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Strong frame for his youth with a lot of moving parts in his swing. Started from wide open stance and took a long knee-to-knee and foot-to-foot toe-tap to square with good separation in hand load. Spins hard with backside collapse that inhibits weight transfer. Uphill swing path has a lot of length to it. Ran an 8.22 60-yard-dash and 5.22 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 83-mph exit velocity and 71-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid feet and glovehand defensively.

Joe LaFiora, 2018, LHP/1B, Neumann-Goretti
5-foot-9, 200-pound left-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and strode to slightly closed. Body stayed quiet, especially his top half. Aggressive hitter with simple, repeatable swing. Ran a 7.84 60-yard-dash. Showcased 80-mph exit velocity and 75-mph arm strength (ran FB up to 78 in game) during workout. Solid defensive skillset.

Shane Souchuck, 2017, RHP/1B, Conwell-Egan Catholic
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a square stance, incorporating a vertically-oriented, waist-high leg kick to slightly closed. Flashed some bat speed and would benefit from more fully incorporating his backside into his swing. Ran a 7.32 60-yard dash and a 4.62 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 87-mph exit velocity and 76-mph arm strength (ran FB up to 82 in game). Works hard defensively. While working fast is a benefit to him on the mound, would like to see him slow down a bit and smooth things out on defense.

Trey Weaver, 2017, 1B/LHP, Franklin Area
5-foot-10, 220-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a wide open stance and strode to slightly open. Drifts into his front side a bit, but top half stays still and eyes stay level. Showed an ability to repeat his swing with a fairly short path. Ran an 8.46 60-yard-dash and 5.20 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 87-mph exit velocity and 67-mph arm strength (ran FB up to 71 in game). Doesn’t play football, but has the feet of an offensive lineman (short quick steps, keeps a good base underneath him). Moved well defensively, especially for his size and exhibited a soft glovehand.
