Preseason Preview: Delone Catholic HS (District 3)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Delone Catholic Squires went 19-5 and advanced to the 2nd round of the PIAA District 3 baseball tournament in 2012. The Squires return six starters and four pitchers for what should be a successful 2013 campaign. Head Coach Alan Felix feels that pitching and team speed will be the strengths of this club. Felix will be searching for a middle of the order bat to help the Squires produce additional offense for the talented pitching staff.

Brett SmithFelix and the Squires will rely heavily on Brett Smith, a Bucknell University recruit. Smith, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound SS/RHP, has a career .483 batting average and over 100 combined hits in a Delone Catholic uniform. The three-sport star is a gifted athlete that has been named All-State at some point in his high school career in baseball, basketball and football.

Smith is one of a number of seniors who will be counted on in 2013. All-Conference OF/LHP Austin Buckley, RHP/1B Alex Berzonski, OF Austin Niel and All-Conference IF Sam Stephan will all be looked to for senior leadership and production.

Felix expects juniors IF/RHP Dalton Haymaker, RHP/3B Devon Craig and RHP Joe Ames to all play a role in Delone Catholic's success. Sophomore C Austin Roth and freshman SS Austin Kuntz will also look to contribute in 2013 and beyond.
