Preseason Preview: Springfield Township (District 1)

ScafidiWith only four returning starters and two returning pitchers with varsity experience much will be new for the Springfield Township Spartans in 2013. A year ago the Spartans won the Bicentennial Conference Championship with a record of 12-1. They went 17-7 overall and advance to the PIAA State Tournament. With a new year comes a new conference. The Spartans are now members of the Suburban One League and are prepared to build on last year's success. Following is an overview of the players who Head Coach Chris Shelly feels will have an impact on the Spartans' success in 2013.

Class of 2013

  • RHP/1B Anthony Scafidi - 6-foot-1, 185-pound Seton Hall recruit who went 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA in 2012. He is ranked No. 78 in the PA Class of 2013 rankings.
  • 2B Tyler Bond - 5-foot-7, 140-pound prospect hit .343 in 2012 with 13 runs scored.
  • SS Luke Pollock - 5-foot-7, 150-pound senior hit .304 with 24 runs scored in 2012.

Class of 2014

  • C/OF Martin Pauwells - 6-foot-3, 195-pound backstop hit .279 with a .396 on base percentage last year.
  • 3B Jeff Hammonds - 6-foot, 180-pound is a newcomer with talent.
  • RHP/IF/OF Ed Bacino - 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect with potential and the ability to play multiple positions.
  • OF Ian Quigg - 6-foot, 155-pound junior who hit .294 in a limited role as a sophomore.
