Preseason Preview: The Haverford School (Inter-Academic League)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

FitzgeraldThe Inter-Academic League is ultra-competitive on a yearly basis and the 2013 season should be no different. The Haverford School Fords are coming off a 3-7 conference record and a 24-15 overall record in 2012. With two of the top three pitchers from last season returning and the emergence of Lehigh recruit Steve Fitzgerald as a pitcher, Coach Bob Castell feels that his pitching staff could keep the Fords in most games. The Fords will have to rely on several underclassmen and first time starters in the every day lineup that will place a premium on its pitching staff. Below are the players who will likely play a major role in the success of the Fords' 2013 campaign.

Class of 2013:

  • OF/RHP Steve Fitzgerald - 6'1", 185-pound Lehigh recruit who hit .379 in 2012 with 37 RBI.
  • 1B/RHP Pat Valentine - 6'3", 190-pound Holy Cross recruit who went 7-1 with a 0.36 ERA last season.
  • OF/LHP Matt Galetta - 5'10", 160-pound senior who hit .318 and finished with a 2.79 ERA in 2012.
  • OF Drew Field - 6'0", 175-pound senior who scored 22 runs a year ago.

Class of 2014:

  • OF/LHP Steve Scornajenghi - 5'10", 155-pound junior who hit .365 with 24 runs scored and stole 12 bases last season.

Class of 2015:

  • INF Kevin McGowan - 5'10", 165-pound sophomore who hit .310 and was named 1st Team All Inter-AC League last season.
