Q&A With Ohio University Commit Nick Falso

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

falsoIt didn't take SS/2B Nick Falso (Wissahickon HS, Class of 2015) very long to get noticed at the Midwest Future Games in August. Playing for Team Pennsylvania, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound middle infielder got everyone's attention with his high energy style of play. Falso is in constant motion and talking from first pitch to last and left Indiana University having made an impression on all that were in attendance.

Although he is likely to play 2B in college, Falso possesses the arm strength to play both middle infield positions (83 mph). Falso flashed his range and arm strength in what was arguably the top defensive play of the Midwest Future Games. He made a highlight real play at 2B, ranging far to his backhand side for a diving stop and then threw out the batter while still on his backside. Falso went 2-for-7 at the plate, including a two-run single to get Team PA out to a lead against Team Missouri in Game One of the event.

Following a busy August and early September of sifting through college options, Falso announced his verbal commitment to Ohio University on September 15. The future Bobcat talked with PBR about the recruiting process and his choice of schools.

PBR:  Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?

Falso: I have decided to attend college at Ohio University. My Family and I felt that it was a great fit academically and athletically for me. I fell in love with the campus and atmosphere the minute I stepped on it and am very excited about my decision.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

Falso: To be honest Ohio University was the first school to contact me and I felt an immediate connection with Coach Smith and the entire coaching staff right from the start. After I had taken my second visit within three weeks to Ohio U I knew that this is where I wanted to be.

PBR:  You participated for Team Pennsylvania at the Midwest Future Games in August. How did that experience help you in the recruiting process?

Falso: Playing for team PA at the Midwest Futures Games was where Coach Smith saw me play for the first time. Playing on a team like this with the best players in your state was an honor and a once in a lifetime experience. The competition was phenomenal and was definitely something I had never seen before. Without playing at the MWFG I don't think I would have ever gotten the opportunity to showcase my abilities in front of Coach Smith or anyone on the Ohio U baseball staff.

PBR:   How did your relationship develop with the Ohio University coaching staff?

Falso: Coach Smith first saw me at the MWFG in Bloomington, Indiana. Following the event my relationship with the Ohio University coaching staff really grew over the phone for about a month. I took a visit and participated in a camp Labor Day weekend. Two weeks later I took one more visit and finally made my commitment.

PBR:  What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Falso:  I can play Shortstop, Third Base or Second Base and have my whole life. The coaching staff projects that I will play second base.

PBR:  What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Falso: My strengths as a player are that I'm scrappy, I work deep into counts, and I ultimately get on base to make things happen any way I can. My biggest strength is probably my defensive ability. I feel I can help my future team by being a very positive leader and by playing the game the right way.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?

Falso: My current GPA is a 3.0

PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for your team going into your junior season?

Falso: Our goal collectively as a team would definitely have to be to reach and go deep into the playoffs and hopefully win our conference which I know we are capable of doing. We will have a very young energetic team out there this year that will be very exciting to watch.
