Unsigned Senior Showcase Analysis: Pitchers

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Keystone State Baseball Academy was the host for the Unsigned Senior Showcase on October 3. A total of 20 participants from three states were in attendance to showcase their abilities. Today we conclude our review of those prospects by taking a look at the pitchers in attendance.

Brett Alaimo, RHP/MIF, 2016, Manheim Township HS (PA)
6-foot, 170-pound uncommitted senior sat 83-85 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a quick, loose arm. The athletic righty also displayed the ability to hold his velocity out of the stretch. Alaimo also showcased a 70 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 72 mph changeup that is thrown at fastball arm speed with arm-side run. Alaimo's frame and athleticism project for additional velocity spikes moving forward.

Beau Burris, 3B/RHP, 2016, Central York HS (PA)
6-foot-3, 190-pound primary third baseman sat 80-81 from a high 3/4 arm slot. The uncommitted senior has a projectable frame and a three-pitch mix that complements his fastball. Burris also displayed a 78 mph cutter, a 71 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation, and a 72 mph changeup. The curveball showed good down action while the changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed with some late sink.

Andrew Gressler, RHP, 2016, Altoona Area HS (PA)
6-foot, 190-pound uncommitted senior sat 79-80 with late life to his fastball thrown with a long arm motion out of a 3/4 arm slot. A high knee stack and some hip-coil to his delivery adds to his deception. Gressler displayed some arm-side run to his fastball and was able to hold his velocity out of the stretch. The righty also showcased a 67 mph slider with sweeping break and a 73 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed.

Bayley Jamanis, 3B/RHP, 2016, Lancaster Catholic HS (PA)
6-foot, 180-pound primary third baseman. Uncommitted senior sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot. Curveball showed 11/5 break with tight rotation. Strike thrower with command of lower half of the strike zone. 75 mph changeup is an above average offering with arm-side run and some sink.

Larry Kirk, RHP, 2016, Archbishop John Carroll HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 180-pound uncommitted senior sat 78-80 from a high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball showed arm-side run with solid command. Displayed a 67 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation at fastball arm speed and a 74 mph changeup with some arm-side run. Simple in-line delivery and projectable frame indicate additional velocity moving forward.

Isaac Neal, OF/RHP, 2016, Parkland HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 185-pound primary outfielder. Uncommitted senior sat 81-84 following a summer where we have seen him up to 87 mph. 3/4 arm slot leads to significant arm-side run on his fastball. 73 mph slider has a chance to be an out pitch at the next level. Also showcased a 78 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed with some arm-side run. Difficulty repeating arm slot leads to command issues at times.

Joe Preciado, RHP, 2017, Council Rock North HS (PA)
6-foot, 200-pound righty showcased has shown a significant velocity spike in the past year. Sat 84-85 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. Long arm action and high knee stack leads to deception in his delivery. Also showcased a 72 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a changeup at 79 mph. Controlled, repeatable mechanics and a physical frame should lead to continued velocity gains.

Colby Shimmel, RHP, 2016, Eastern York HS (PA)
Very projectable 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame. Uncommitted senior sat 81-83 with more in the tank from a high 3/4 arm slot. Displayed excellent balance and repeatable mechanics with above average command of the strike zone. Showcased a 73 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation with good tilt, a 73 mph changeup with arm-side run and an above average splitter at 73 mph. A combination of physical size, a solid four-pitch mix and athleticism indicates early success for Shimmel at the next level.

Joey Spallinger, RHP/OF, 2016, North Penn HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 155-pound uncommitted senior. Righty sat 80-81 from an over-the-top arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. High knee stack and some hip-coil add deception to his delivery. Flashed a 66 mph curveball with tight 11/5 rotation and a 74 mph changeup at fastball arm speed. 75 mph slider lacks command but has the makings of a quality fourth pitch. Good arm speed and ability to get over his front leg should lead to additional velocity moving forward.

Tyler Stabley, LHP/OF, 2018, Red Lion Area HS (PA)
5-foot-7, 115-pound sophomore belies his size. Lefty sat 73-76 with arm-side run from a high 3/4 arm slot. Also displayed a drown down fastball with significant run. Stabley has a compact, simple deliver with a loose arm action and gets downhill well (81 mph from outfield). Also showcased a 63 mph curveball with 1/7 rotation and a 67 mph changeup at fastball arm speed. Stabley will be a definite follow in this class.
