Unsigned Senior Spotlight - Strath Haven RHP Ashton Raines

Ashton RainesStrath Haven right-handed pitcher Ashton Raines jumped on the radar eleven months ago at the Preseason All-State Showcase. During his bullpen session, Raines sat 80-81 with his fastball, while showing a solid feel for his secondary stuff (change-up, cutter, curveball).

We followed up on the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder early in the spring high school season to find his fastball sitting at 82-84 with occasional armside run. On that day, he featured a slurvy breaking ball at 68-71 that he consistently threw for strikes, even though it varied in shape from 11/5 action to a more one-plane sweeper. Raines pitched aggressively out of a three-quarter slot from an up-tempo delivery that has a bit of funk in it.

As the ace of the Panthers staff in 2014, Raines racked up 42.1 innings pitched, allowing 35 hits and 17 walks against 44 strikeouts, on his way to second-team all-Central League recognition.
