Updated PIAA Class AA Super 16 (4-20-15)

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

One month into a precipitation-filled spring, we are releasing our first in-season update to the PIAA Class AA Super 16 (i.e. the teams we believe are best positioned to reach the state tournament, if district tournaments started today). A couple of notes:

1. X-Y under "Berth" = [District]-[Bid]. For example, 3-2 is the runner-up from District III.
2. If multiple districts are listed on one line, those districts will form a sub-regional to determine that bid.

2015 PIAA Class AA Super 16
Berth School Record Notes
3-1 Lancaster Catholic
8-3 Pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in nine of eleven games. Two of three losses came 5-4 to West York Area (our current top team in District III 3A) and 2-0 to Hempfield (our current top team in District III 4A).
4-2 Hughesville
4-3 Despite two one-run losses last week, Hughesville gets the nod here due to the fact that its pitching staff will keep it in every ballgame (only 14 runs allowed in seven contests).

12-1 Neumann-Goretti
7-1 Only blemish on an otherwise clean slate came against an ACC-bound arm; good preparation in case they run into Loyalsock Twp again. Saints have recorded wins over current top teams in District XII 4A & the PAISAA
1-1 Devon Prep
7-1 Expect the Tide to continue to roll through overmatched opponents. Pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in six of eight games. Only loss came vs PAISAA power Malvern Prep.

4-1 Loyalsock Township 6-2 Two-time defending state champs are undefeated against in-state competition after holding their own against national powerhouse schools 3-5 times their size at the USA Baseball National High School Invitational.
2-1 Lakeland 3-0 The Chiefs have taken care of business, so far, in an area of the state that has been hampered by precipitation.

11-1 North Schuylkill
8-2 Close race here, but wins over 3A contenders Blue Mountain and Tamaqua Area really stand out for the Spartans.
12-2 Prep Charter 4-3 Huskies hold their position here by virtue of a 5-4 win against defending Philadelphia Public League champ Philadelphia Academy Charter.

5-1/
6-1
Central 8-2 The Dragons picked up right where they left off last year, rolling through their competition, including an impressive 7-1 win over projected 3A state rep Somerset Area. Have allowed three or less runs in eight of ten games.
3-2 Camp Hill
6-3 Lions getting it done with pitching, having tossed four shutouts and only allowing more than four runs once (to 3A contender West Perry). Beat Delone Catholic 2-0. Two of three losses are by 4-3 score vs 3A schools.

8-1/
9-1
Cranberry Area 3-1 Moniteau actually knocked off the Berries by the score of 6-0 last week, but until a team proves they can handle Pitt-bound LHP Dylan Cyphert, Cranberry Area gets the benefit of the doubt come playoff time.
7-2 Keystone Oaks
6-1 Has allowed two runs or less in five of six games against in-state foes, against whom the Golden Eagles are undefeated. Posted 12-0 drubbing over quality Seton-La Salle squad and knocked off Steel Valley ace Brandon Donovan, one of the top pitchers in the state, by a score of 2-1.

7-1 Neshannock 9-3 Other WPIAL teams have less losses, but the Lancers are on a 7-game win streak that began with an impressive 3-2 win over 3A lead dog West Allegheny. Two of three losses by 1-0 scores back in March. Have allowed two or less runs in ten of twelve games.
6-2 Bellwood-Antis 10-2 The Blue Devils hold their spot despite back-to-back losses early last week. Pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in eight of twelve games and has an ace-in-the-hole in Nebraska-bound RHP Chad Luensmann.

10-1 Hickory 6-1 The Hornets sit atop Region 4 and have thoroughly handled their opponents, including an 11-1 drubbing of defending district champ Franklin Area (albeit without Knights ace Zach Guth on the mound).
7-3 Riverside 9-1 Stubbed their toe against Neshannock, but otherwise haven't really been challenged. Have held opponents to zero or one run in half of games.
