Updated PIAA Class AAA Super 16 (5-4-15)

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

As we head down the home stretch of this weather-condensed season that has many leagues gearing up for conference tournaments, below is our second in-season update of our PIAA Class AAA Super 16 (i.e. the teams we believe are best positioned to reach the state tournament, if district tournaments started today). A couple of notes:

1. X-Y under "Berth" = [District]-[Bid]. For example, 3-2 is the runner-up from District III.
2. If multiple districts are listed on one line, those districts will form a sub-regional to determine that bid.
3. If any of this data is incorrect (specifically, team records), please let us know.

2015 PIAA Class AAA Super 16 (records through May 3rd)
Berth School Record Notes
1-1 Holy Ghost Prep
12-2 Went 3-2 since last update. Firebirds are still the class of this district, w/a pitching staff that is allowing only 1.5 runs/game. Losses came vs district 2A favorite Devon Prep & in extra innings to 4A contender Pennsbury.
3-4 Shippensburg Area 12-3 Went 6-0 since last update. The Mid-Penn Colonial leaders gave up a grand total of four runs during that stretch, including triumphs over solid Northern York & Greencastle-Antrim squads.

2-1 Valley View 8-2
Went 3-2 since last update. The Cougars knocked off North Pocono, which swept Abington Hgts, which beat the Cougars. VV pitching has been most consistent, only allowing more than two runs once (in 3-2 loss to AH).
4-1 Jersey Shore Area 7-4
Went 5-3 since last update. District tourney should be wild, as this cohort has taken turns beating up on each other so far. Bulldogs continue to get the nod with a staff that has held every opponent to three runs or less.

11-1 Pottsville Area 12-4 Went 4-2 since last update. Another totally up-for-grabs district. The Crimson Tide sit atop Division 1 of the Schuylkill League and have suffered their four losses by a combined six runs.
3-2 West York Area 13-3 Went 4-3 since last update. A three-game losing streak last week proved the Bulldogs are fallible, but it doesn't erase their strong start to the season that included a number of quality wins.

12-1 Archbishop Wood 11-3 Went 4-1 since last update. The Vikings lead the Philadelphia Catholic League, although their hold on that spot got a little more tenuous when #2 starter Anthony Russo left the team to focus on football, where he is a DI prospect.
3-3 East Pennsboro 11-3 Went 4-2 since last update. Pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in twelve contests. The Panthers trail West Perry by one game in the Mid-Penn Capital Division. Three losses by six total runs.

3-1 West Perry 15-1 Went 6-0 since last update. Leaving no doubt, the Mustangs recorded recent wins over district contenders East Pennsboro, Greencastle-Antrim, West York Area, and Northern York, holding those four to two total runs.
12-2 Franklin Towne Charter 9-2 Went 3-1 since last update. FTC pitched three shutouts in those games, only falling to district 2A favorite Prep Charter, and sit one game back in the Philadelphia Public League Division A standings.

5-1/
6-1
Somerset Area 9-3 Went 2-1 since last update. Eagles live on their keen batting eye (.437 OBP, 68 BB vs 54 K) and team speed (averaging more than three stolen bases per game).
7-2 West Mifflin Area 12-4 Went 4-2 since last update. The Titans have run away with a solid WPIAL 3A Section 4 and have only lost two games against in-state competition.

7-1 West Allegheny 12-3 Went 5-0 since last update. The Indians currently hold a half game lead over Chartiers Valley in WPIAL 3A Section 3. Deep pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in twelve games.
8-1/
9-1
Punxsutawney Area 13-0 Went 5-0 since last update. As mentioned previously, it would take a monumental upset for the Chucks to get knocked off in district play. Only two opponents have kept the final score at less than a 3-run spread.

10-1 Cathedral Prep 15-0 Went 8-0 since last update. The Ramblers offense has scored at least eight runs in eleven of the team's games, while the pitching staff has given up three runs or less in twelve contests.
7-3 Knoch 13-1 Went 5-0 since last update. Locked in as the WPIAL 3A Section 5 champ, the Knights have allowed three runs or less in eight contests (four or less in all but two games).
