JOHNSON HS VS. REAGAN HS - 05.18.17

By Colter Bostick
PBR Texas Scout

Richard Gilbert, LHP, Johnson HS, 2017
Texas Tech recruit. 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame. Gilbert’s third start in the Texas High School Playoffs may not have been as sharp as his first two outings, but the senior battled, giving his team a chance to win, only allowing one earned run. His fastball sat at 84-86 mph, topping out at 88 mph once. His breaking ball, which he varies in shape, was 73-75 mph, while his changeup was 69-72 mph. He scattered locations with all three of his pitches drove his pitch count up. His final line was 6 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 5 BB

Cal Carver, LHP, Reagan HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. Carver, who was originally expected to start the game, entered in fifth inning to try and keep the Johnson bats at bay. His fastball clocked in at 82-84 mph, T85, while his curveball sat from 66-72 mph, and his circle changeup was 75-78 mph.  Carver’s off-speed helped him force favorable contact from the Johnson hitters and keep his pitch count to 30 in his 2.1 IP.  Carver’s foremost pitch, a 12-6 curveball has good spin, and can vary in depth. He is able to successfully utilize his elevated fastball early in counts and draw a lot of swings when the curveball is on.
