SHOCKERS OF THE DAY

Marian Central Catholic (7-8, 2-5 East Suburban Catholic) swept a twin-bill from No. 14 Marist (14-5, 3-2) romping past the Redhawks 16-3 in the opener and winning the nightcap 6-4. In game one the Hurricanes scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to end this one in 5 innings. Dallas McDonough went three-for-three with two doubles and plated three Hurricane runs. Sal Rodriguez and Peter Kolnar each had a pair of singles and three RBI. Brant Gates fired a six-hitter at the Redhawks with four strikeouts. MCC completed the sweep by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, breaking up a 4-4 tie. Pat McCabe ripped a clutch RBI single to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 lead and then a second run scored when the ball was kicked in the outfield. Hurricane closer Kolton Rominsky dispatched the Redhawks in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep and save the game for starting and winning Hurricane pitcher McCabe. Sal Rodriguez went deep for MCC and plated two runs.

Pontiac (13-8, 6-1 Corn Belt) outlasted No. 18 Normal U-High (21-2, 6-2 Corn Belt) in nine heart-wrenching innings behind Jake Curry 8-6. Curry had two hits including a double and plated a pair of Indian runs, to lead the Pontiac attack. Curry fired 3.2 innings of two-hit relief at the Pioneers, allowing an unearned run, to pick up the win. After Pontiac had scored twice in the top of the ninth, on a Pioneer miscue and a fielder’s choice, U-High put the tying runs on base, with two outs against Curry. Curry ended the game with a flourish fanning the final Pioneer hitter to end the Corn Belt classic. Levi Ranson chipped in with two singles and an RBI for the Indians. Up next for Pontiac, a Wednesday Corn Belt battle at No. 23 Mahomet Seymour (14-3, 6-2 Cornbelt) at 4:30.
