Monday May 12 Games

No.21 Brother Rice 16, No.1 Rita 5
Brother Rice (21-8; 10-4) trailed the top-ranked Mustangs 5-3 after three innings at 7740 South Western Avenue on Chicago’s South Side. The Crusaders shrugged off the deficit and exploded for eight runs in the fourth and went on to crush St.Rita 16-5, behind senior Jake Barry. Barry tripled, homered and plated four big Crusader runs. Sophomore Andy Dyke added four singles and three RBI while sophomore Mike Massey also had four hits, including a double and also plated three. Senior Kevin Biondic chipped in with two singles a double and three RBI.

Herscher 1, Wilmington 0
Herscher (24-6; 13-1) clinched another I-8 North championship, their fifth consecutive and sixth in the last seven years, under the tutelage of Tiger head coach Eric Regez, with the win at Wilmington. RHP Nick Wheeler fired a four-hit shutout at the Wildcats to improve to 5-0 on the mound in 2014. The Tigers could only muster one hit against Wilmington’s hard-luck loser Al Ziomie. That one hit produced the only run of this thriller, which was delivered on a single from senior Luke Azzarelli. Azzarelli’s single plated Sam Hall, who had reached base on a Wildcat miscue.

Geneseo 2, La Salle-Peru 1
Geneseo (21-5-1; 11-1) won a thriller in Geneseo on Monday, behind starting and winning pitcher Billy Converse. Converse outdueled L-P sophomore Brady Huebbe, as both pitchers went the distance for their respective teams. In the bottom of the sixth, Maple Leaf LF Trevor Craig decided to take over the game. Craig’s infield single plated the eventual game-winning run and then he made the play of the game in the top of the seventh. With Cavalier runners on second and third and one out, Craig made a sensational sliding catch and then popped-up and fired a strike to second to double-up the Cavalier base-runner and end this thriller. The huge game-ending play by Craig sent Maple Leaf fans dancing on State Street and the Maple Leafs into sole-possession of first place in the NIB-12 West. The two clubs will battle again at Veterans Park in Peru on Tuesday. La Salle-Peru (19-13;11-2) will travel to Geneseo on Thursday.

Oak Forest 4, No. 2 Lemont 2
Oak Forest (20-7; 11-3) stunned the No. 2-ranked Indians by erupting for three big runs in the top of the sixth to erase a 2-1 Lemont lead and take home the huge Bengal victory. The Bengals tied the game on a miscue, the second of the inning by Lemont (24-2; 13-1). With one out, Drew Dominik ripped a two-run single to left to put OF up 4-2. Matt Zubik fired 2.1 innings of one-hit relief to pick the win for the Bengals.
