In the Box: Adjust Your Approach To Your Level of Play

If you are a high school player and have a good approach at the plate, one with purpose and simplicity, you are way ahead of the game. If you are a high school coach who preaches approach over mechanics, you are also ahead of the game and will breed more success than the coach preaching mechanics the majority of the time.

So what happens when coaches preach a “big-league style” approach at the high school level and it doesn’t work?  This is something I see from some of the high school programs I’ve worked with.  Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about.

The following is a text dialogue between one of my pro hitters I work with and myself after a game against the Diamondbacks last year.  This is conversation I routinely have with some hitters I work with.

First, we talked about his approach facing a relief pitcher from the Diamondbacks.
