Michigan Insider: Top Underclass Uncommitted Sleeper Prospects

With the Summer season coming to an end and the 2016-2017 high school sports season as well as fall ball getting underway, we would like to take a look at some of the top uncommitted prospects at each position. Over the past month we looked at the top 2017 prospects and as you can see by our 2017 Player Rankings there are numerous talented prospects available.

Today we are starting with the top uncommitted underclass sleeper prospects in Michigan. We will look to create a few top uncommitted lists each week and as you can see by our 2018 and 2019 Player Rankings, there are numerous talented prospects available.

Class of 2018

John Barnwell, OF/RHP, Detroit Country Day
Ranking: 53rd in Michigan’s 2018 class
Scouting Report: Barnwell has an athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame. He stands tall and slightly open in the batter’s box while using a leg kick with his load. He showed great bat speed and had some raw power to the pull side of the field. His exit velocity was 82 mph and he ran a 7.28 60-yard dash. In the outfield, he takes good angles to the ball and uses his lower half well with a crow hop for his throws. His velocity from the outfield was 88 mph. On the mound, he pitches from a controlled pace and high leg kick. Has a short fast arm action, tends to throw with all arm. Fastball sat 81-83 mph touching 85 mph, 66-67 mph sweeping curveball, and 65 mph straight changeup.
College Outlook: Barnwell is an athletic built prospect standing 6-foot, 170-pounds. He moves well in outfield and projects as a corner OF type throwing 88 mph from his position. Uses a short inside out swing that allows him to take balls to the opposite field. Has shown the ability to pull the ball on inside pitches as well. On the mound he is raw but the arm strength is evident. Fastball has been seen as high as 85 mph with a sharp breaking curve. As he continues to polish his mechanics could be an interesting prospect on the mound.
