17/18 Dinger Bat World Series

By JD Heilmann
PBR Ohio Scouting Director

Joe Vranesic, RHP, Moeller High School, 2015, Ohio Elite (VALENTINE)

6-foot-2, 190 right-hander really shined in this World Series. His fastball from a high 3/4 slot was easy and sitting 87-90 topping out at 91. His 1/4 turn lift on his delivery gives deception, but causes to close himself off a little. His curveball was 75-76 with good depth and able to throw for a strike. Not much effort in his delivery, which makes me believe that their is a lot more in there. Really was impressed with his outing and the way he competed.

Unsigned Seniors in northeast Ohio

Ryan Falls, LHP, NDCL, 2015

Ryan has been somewhat of an enigma, trying to find some of his starts this summer, but I was able to track him down a few times. In game situations the big 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher showed a good fastball at 84-87 mph and a 76-77 mph slider that seems to be improving every time out. In a recent competitive workout against high level batters he worked at 86-88 touching 90 once, keeping the ball in the bottom half of the strike zone with both pitches. His rhythm and tempo could be a little smoother but that will be easy to clean up once he gets to college.

18u Columbus Cobras

Nick Buchanan, LHP/OF, Westerville Central, 2015

5-foot-10, 165-pound wiry body frame. The unsigned prospect hit first for the 18u Cobras and started on the mound. Left-handed hitter squared up the baseball in both of his at bats showing power as well. He lined out to center-field and hit a triple over the right-fielder’s head in his second AB. From the mound he uses quick arm speed coming from an upper ¾ slot. In his first inning he was up with his fastball but then settled in as the game went on finding a nice release point. His fastball was consistently 81-84 mph. He showed a good feel for a curveball that showed signs of being sharp with 1/7 break at 72-74 mph. He did not use a changeup on this occasion. Could be a two-way prospect but his services will most likely be needed as a pitcher at the next level.

16u Great Lakes Prospects

Christian Orr, MIF, Clay, 2017

5-foot-10, 170-pound athletic body frame. He hit second in the lineup and played both middle infield positions in separate games for the 16u Great Lakes Prospects. From the infield he shows good athletic footwork, moving well laterally to get to the baseball. Right-handed hitter starts with a tall set up, and also uses a smaller leg kick for power. In four AB’s he walked twice, singled, and went 6-3 running a 4.45 down the line to first base.
