Being strong up the middle is what every coach wants their team to be, and having a strong shortstop who can also hit gives a team the chance to be special. In this week’s edition of, On the Hunt, seven shortstops from the 2019-2021 classes take center stage as players to follow, and ones who have a chance to make an impact at the next level whether it be in the field or at the plate. The athleticism and projection of each player stands out, and there is plenty more on the way. States represented are Arizona, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Texas

Colton Stotler SS / 2B / West Wilkes, NC / 2020

There is a lot to like about the long and athletic Stotler. Still maturing, but already 6-foot, 175-pounds with long limbs and easy movements, Stotler demonstrates a great deal of upside. The switch-hitting infielder shows strength from both sides (88 mph exit velocity left-handed and 87 mph right-handed), and should continue adding to that as he matures. He sets up in a balanced stance with his hands next to his ear, and utilizes short separation with a minor stride to quickly and powerfully work his barrel through the zone. Stotler’s strong wrists and quick hands stand out, currently, and he shows the ability to consistently hit the ball hard. Controlled throughout the swing, Stotler has a loose finish and is rarely off-balance. In the field, his feet work well and his hands are sure while delivering accurate throws. He looks to be better suited at third base in the future, and by the looks of his swing, has a chance to develop enough power to stick there. Overall, Stotler has a high-ceiling that will likely be reached as he matures physically, and recruiters will want to take notice of a possible middle of the order type corner infielder.
