Ontario Draft Preview

By Chris Kemlo and Nathan Rode

The 2016 Major League Draft takes place June 9-11. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.

Ontario was a popular scouting destination in 2015 with a banner class. 1B Josh Naylor (St. Joan of Arc HS, ON) went 12th overall to the Marlins while OFs Miles Gordon (St. Ignatius of Loyola HS, ON) and Demi Orimoloye (St. Matthew HS, ON) went in the fourth round. This year, two players landed in the PBR Top 100 with C Andy Yerzy (York Mills Collegiate SS, ON) and RHP Jordan Balazovic (St. Martin’s Collegiate SS, ON) going back to back at Nos. 92 and 93, while others had their share of scouts following them throughout the spring. Before 2015, Ontario didn’t have three selections in the top 10 rounds since 2002. It’s never happened in back-to-back years, but 2016 could change that.

PBR Draft 100 Prospects

92. Andy Yerzy, C, York Mills Collegiate SS, ON
Yerzy and his 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame have been known for quite some time now. A member of the Canadian Junior National Team since the age of 15, he has had plenty of exposure over his amateur career. The left-handed hitting catcher has an easy swing and the ability to hit for power to all fields.
