It’s been a busy three-plus months since the last Class of 2017 rankings update. The winter months, both on the state and national levels, have shed more light on this extraordinarily talented and deep senior class. Our updated Top 400 Class of 2017 rankings reflect everything our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff has seen.
It is important to note that the PBR overall rankings only include the states that we intimately know from our scouting staff. The updated Top 400 Class of 2017 rankings is comprised of our current 34-state coverage area, which now includes Texas prospects. The PBR Draft 100, which lists the top 100 draft prospects in the country, will be updated later in the month.
Aside from the inclusion of Texas prospects, there have been significant shakeups, from top to bottom, in the overall rankings. With that said, OF/RHP Jordon Adell (Ballard HS, KY) holds firm at the top of the list. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Louisville recruit features undeniable top-of-the-scale athleticism and explosive tools.
LHP Mackenzie Gore (Whiteville HS, NC) continues to see his draft stock skyrocket, as the 6-foot-1 East Carolina recruit jumps to No. 2 overall. RHP/3B RHP/3B Joe Perez has established himself as arguably the top prospect in Florida after a blistering start of his high school season, and subsequently moves up seven spots to No. 3. RHP Shane Baz (Concordia Lutheran HS, TX), the hard-throwing Texas Christian recruit, is the top prospect in Texas.
The state of Oklahoma once again impacts the top 10 with a pair of prospects: 3B Ryan Vilade (Stillwater HS, OK) and OF Conner Uselton (Southmoore HS, OK), both Oklahoma State recruits. RHP Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS, LA) and OF Quentin Holmes (McClancy Memorial HS, NY) also hold firm in the top 10.
From top to bottom, Florida’s 2017 class is the strongest in the country, and it is reflected in the overall rankings. After Perez, SS/3B Mark Vientos (American Heritage HS, FL), C M.J. Melendez (Westminster Christian HS, FL), SS Brady McConnell (Merritt Island HS, FL), RHP Garrett Hunter Ruth (Bucholz HS, FL), LHP Jake Eder (Atlantic HS, FL), SS Jeter Downs (SLAM Charter, FL), SS Chris Seise (West Orange HS, FL) and 1B Alex Toral (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL) are all ranked in the top 25.
Outside the top 25, many prospects have made significant jumps in the overall rankings. Big risers include: OF Austin Beck (North Davidson HS, NC), LHP Michael Kirian (New Riegel HS, OH), RHP Tyler Brown (Olentangy Orange HS, OH), C Jake Taylor (Shawnee HS, OK), LHP Reid Detmers (Glenwood HS, IL), RHP/SS John Swanda (Des Moines Roosevelt HS, IA), RHP Glenn Albanese (Batavia HS, IL), SS Adisyn Coffey (Delta HS, IN), C Zach Jackson (Haines City HS, FL), SS Dondrae Bremner (Bill Crothers Secondary, ON), LHP Jack Dreyer (Johnston HS, IA) and RHP Marius Balandis (St. Laurence HS, IL), to name a few.
