North Tennessee College Prospect Showcase: Pitcher Analysis

By Doug Hall
Tennessee Director of Scouting

PBR Tennessee held its inaugural event in the state with the North Tennessee College Prospect Showcase on August 24 at Station Camp High School. The following is a look at the pitchers who took the mound during the event.  This is pitcher analysis only.  Those players who also participated as a position player had that analysis featured in a previous article.

Winston Cannon, RHP, Upperman HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 185 pound prospect uses medium arm action with high ¾ arm slot, can also drop down to the side, fastball was 79-86 with top velocity of 86 coming from the side arm slot, high ¾ fastball showed slight cut while side arm delivery showed arm-side run, curveball was 11/5 with late action, change-up was 73-75 with arm side run and should continue to develop, with size and arm has potential for additional velocity, high follow in 2016 class.

Brock Myers, SS/RHP, R/R, Davidson Academy, 2017
5-foot-11, 150-pound prospect uses shorter arm action through high ¾ arm slot, throws consistent strikes with his 81-85 mph fastball that shows some arm side- run, also throws a cutter that has some hard late action, sharp 12/6 action on curveball in the 66-70 range, near fastball arm speed on change-up that was in the 69-72 mph range, tight spin and late action on slider that was consistently between 71-75, tends to rush and fall towards  1B, good upside and should continue to develop strength to add velocity and refine secondary pitches.

Alex Carignan, C/RHP, Siegel HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect uses long arm action with a high ¾ arm slot, shows good arm quickness, 80-84 mph fastball with slight cut that he occasionally gets under, curveball was 68-71 mph with hard 12/6 action with fastball arm speed, change-up showed fastball arm speed with arm side run at 73-76 mph, showed some effort in delivery, good size and strength help potential to be a prospect to follow.

Jack Sisk, RHP, Ravenwood HS, 2018
6-foot, 220-pound prospect uses loose arm action with high ¾ arm slot, delivery is repeatable with good balance and minimal effort, fastball has arm side run at 78-81 mph, near fastball arm action on curveball with 12/6 action with late movement and sharpness, 68-69 mph change-up with good arm action and sink, mixes three pitches for strikes, projectable upside, will continue to see velocity and command gains with physical maturity.

Sam Moore, RHP, Gallatin HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 165-pound prospect uses medium arm action with high ¾ arm slot, shows repeatable and deliberate delivery with some effort, fastball shows straight to slight arm-side movement at 79-81, curveball shows sharp, late 12/6 action at 69-73 with fastball arm speed, change-up at 73-75 mph with slight arm side run, keeps front side closed, tendency to fall towards 1B side while keeping shoulders level. Potential to add velocity with added strength and refinement to mechanics.

James Rockwell, RHP/SS, Gallatin HS, 2016
5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect uses medium arm action with high ¾ arm slot, arm shows some quickness, fastball and change-up show cutting action due to arm coming across the body, fastball was consistently 78-80, curveball showed sharp 12/6 downward action at 64-67, change-up showed cutting action with near fastball arm speed at 71-73 mph, shows repeatable mechanics with minimal effort, with potential to improve should be an interesting prospect to follow.

Kody Timmons, SS/RHP, Beech HS, 2016
5-foot-10, 152-pound prospect uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, arm shows quickness, balance point was rushed leading to erratic location of pitches, fastball velocity was 77-80 mph with little movement, showed a sharp 11/5 curveball with late action and fastball arm speed, change-up was third best pitch on this occasion, had difficulty locating, was clocked at 68-71 mph, maintains online direction with lower half.

Lucas Gross, LHP/1B, Station Camp HS, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect uses medium arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, slight downward pause, repeatable delivery with minimal effort, fastball was 75-79 mph with some gradual arm-side run, curveball shows potential to be a good pitch when he stays on top and finishes at 60-62, change-up is thrown with good arm action at near fastball arm speed at 62-65 mph, maintains a closed front side and good balance at the power position.

Andrew Whited, LHP, Station Camp, 2015
5-foot-10, 150-pound prospect uses medium arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, worked from the stretch only,  throws strikes and stays around the zone with 71-74 mph fastball that shows arm side run, shows repeatable delivery, curveball shows good spin with 11/5 action at 62-63 mph, showed a change-up with fade at 59-63 mph, can throw strikes with all three pitches, works the outer part of the strike zone well with all pitches, continued strength gains should show improvement in velocity.

Chandler Newcome, RHP/SS, Gallatin HS, 2019
5-foot-9, 240-pound prospect uses short arm action with ¾ arm slot, showed 70-74 mph fastball with arm side run, curveball was 62-64 mph with 11/5 action, 71-72 mph slider, showed a 67-69 mph change-up at near fastball arm speed with sink, will hopefully see young prospect continue to mature and develop.
