Top Prospect Games Spotlight: Knoxville Central 2016 RHP Alex Haynes

By Matt Byrd
Director of Scouting

Over the coming days, we will take a look at players who will be participating in the PBR Tennessee Top Prospect Games at the University of Tennessee on June 9-10. The event affords players the opportunity to showcase their abilities in a combination showcase/game play event and will feature some of the top uncommitted Class of 2016 and 2017 players in the state.

Knoxville Central 2016 RHP Alex Haynes passes the eye test with his 6-foot-3, athletic frame and turned haynes1heads at the East Tennessee Prospect Showcase in January. Haynes has an extremely quick arm that works through a high-3/4 slot. Every fastball Haynes threw in his bullpen session sat 90-91 mph, and he impressed with an 86-87 mph cutter that was downright nasty.  He complemented the fastball and cutter with a hard sinker at 84-85 mph and a 73-74 mph changeup.  While he tends to slow the arm down slightly on the changeup, it has the makings of being a quality pitch at the next level.

Haynes, whose phone began ringing from Division I coaches following the January event, pitched in front of several coaches this spring. While he struggled some with his command at times, he helped lead the Bobcats to a 21-10 record on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, Haynes posted 57 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched while also leading the team with a .429 batting average.

Haynes will put his low-90’s fastball on display at the Top Prospect Games at the University of Tennessee in front of many coaches who want to get an early summer look at him.
