PBR Draft 100 Spotlight: Shane Baz

By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor

Last summer, RHP Shane Baz (Concordia Lutheran HS, TX) took the hill at the Tournament of Stars while a familiar opponent watched. Glenn Cecchini, the manager of the 18U National Team, is the head coach at Barbe HS, LA, and faced Baz in the spring. Cecchini knew about the fastball, but Baz had added a cutter/slider that helped him dominate batters that day. Baz went on to make Team USA and win a gold medal. He put himself on the map as one of the top righties in the country with a 91-94 mph fastball and only further established himself this spring. With an easy, athletic delivery and boring action to the fastball, he induces weak contact while mixing in sharp secondary offerings in a curveball and slider. The risky history of high school right-handers may push him down the draft board come June, but he’s a bona fide first-round talent with frontline stuff and the top righty in the country not named Hunter Greene. If he were to make it to Texas Christian, which is unlikely, he could contribute as a two-way player with his right-handed power as well.
