Alex Amos commits to Pittsburgh

Alex Amos
2014 Top Prospect Games participant and Millbrook High School outfielder Alex Amos has verbally committed to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall of 2016. Amos is the third current Millbrook player that is bound for Division I, joining senior outfielder Ryan Hartigan (Virginia) and senior infielder Bruce Keenan (Bucknell). The Pioneers are coming off of an outstanding 2014, going deep in the postseason before falling in the State Championship game to Hanover. This year Millbrook will be led by Amos, Hartigan, Keenan, Conor Hartigan (OF, 2017), and returning pitchers Anthony Simonelli (2017), Trey Braithwaite (2016), and Colin Benner (2015). The Pioneers are one of the early favorites to return to the 4A State Tournament and have the depth to compete for the title.

Amos stands an athletic 5-10, 165 pounds. He is a high-energy two-way player that primarily plays the middle infield, but is also very good on the mound. At shortstop, Amos has very good hands and is an athletic defender. He has plenty of arm to play either middle infield position and has a very quick transfer and release. As a hitter, he takes great at-bats and attacks the baseball, creating leverage that allows him to generate bat speed and power. On the mound, Amos throws over the top and sat 84-86 at the Top Prospect Games, touching 87. He has enough feel for his fastball to cut it and sink it when he wants to. He also threw a good overhand curve and sinking change-up.

When he arrives at Pittsburgh, Amos figures to immediately be able to help the Panthers on the mound, as well as, being a viable option in the field. His ability as a position player will likely limit how much he is used on the mound throughout his career, but he has the tools to be a good late-inning reliever that could start games if he is needed to. As a position player, Amos has the potential to develop into a top of the order type of hitter who grinds out long at-bats and has extra base power.

Congratulations to Alex!
