By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Wisconsin/Illinois

The 2014 class in Wisconsin is heavy with outfielders and right handed pitchers at the top of the list. Dalton Roach is one of the many right handed pitchers on that list. An Eau Claire Memorial product, Roach helped to lead the Old Abes to the sectional semi-final game where they lost a thriller in 12 innings to Hudson.

Roach posted a 2.14 ERA and went 3-3 on the year with two saves. He pitched 36 innings with 42 strikeouts and a 1.47 WHIP.Dalton Roach

Roach has an athletic build with length, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. His delivery has rhythm, regular effort and stays online with an athletic finish. His arm action is loose and quick working from a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball is mostly straight, shows late jump through the zone with control at 83-85 mph, touching 86 mph. His curveball has 11/5 shape and thrown with near fastball arm speed, also showing control at 68-69 mph. Throws a straight changeup at 74-76 mph flashing excellent deception and sink with control.

Roach’s search has featured a number of Division I schools, he’s been garnering interest from Jacksonville University, Middle Tennessee State University, Valparaiso University, Winona State University, Minnesota State University-Mankato and St. Cloud State University.

Roach said he has visited St. Cloud State about a month ago and just over a week ago visited with Valparaiso and Middle Tennessee State. He also has a scheduled visit to Winona State and is in the process of setting up visits with Jacksonville and Mankato in the near future.

He search is not just based on baseball alone. Roach said, “I am looking for a school with a good business program because at this point in time I plan to major in accounting. I would like to go to a university with a high job placement rate where I can graduate in 4 years. “

Roach is looking forward to a successful senior year. He played basketball through his junior year but is hanging up the hoop shoes to focus solely on baseball his senior season.

“My goal is to just pound the zone like I usually do and make batters do something with what I throw to them. I want to keep a very low ERA with very minimal walks. A team goal this year is to get to the state tournament. I would like to pitch in the state championship game and lead my team to a victory, so I can end my high school career on a high note.”
