Denmark advances to Sectional Championship

By Matt Yarber

In a game that featured no earned runs, Denmark defeated Freedom 3-1 behind the arms of Derek Van Pay and Tanner Umentum. Denmark jumped out to an early 2 run lead in 2 innings from 2 errors by the Freedom defense and never looked back.

Derek Van Pay, the Senior RHP, looked good through 4 innings allowing one unearned run in the 4th. The St. Cloud State commit sat 80-83 for his outing touching an 84. After letting up a single to start the fifth he was relieved by Tanner Umentum (pictured right). The Chicago State commit used his off-speed pitches to keep the Freedom hitters off balance the rest of the way.  When need, Umentum would show off his 83-85 mph fastball but relied mostly on his breaking ball to work three scoreless innings.

Freedom countered with Justin Scoville on the bump. The Midland commit attacked the Denmark hitters letting up 5 hits with only one walk. He commanded both sides of the plate with his 75-78 mph fastball and mixed in his 65-67 mph breaking ball that kept hitters guessing all game.

The win for Denmark sets up a Sectional Championship between the Tritans of Notre Dame and the Vikings of Denmark. The matchup is set to begin at 4:15 today at Chilton High School.
